First thoughts on the New F1 changes and broadcast.

I still miss the sounds of V8s and V10s revving to 20K RPM but at least the racing was pretty decent. Nowhere near as exciting as IndyCar on an oval or sprint cars, but I signed up for Apple TV so I guess I am committed now.

Yep. It's all good but go to 1:53 for the best part. THIS is the sound of F1!!!! Imagine a field of 24-28 cars making sounds like this!!! As hard it is might be to believe the Matra V12s sounded even better!

Edit: For more head spinning F1 sounds, listen to this 1983 Alfa (and this is a 2008 video so it's not even in true factory tune). Audio is slightly out of sync with the video. Sue and I saw Mario Andretti drive this car in combat at the Long Beach Grand Prix. THIS is F1.

It’s not like this is the first year of hybrids so that gripe seems a bit late. Are the cars significantly slower? Not really

I’m giving it a chance on different tracks

I’m interested!
The cars visibly move around again too, it kind of reminded me of the V10 or V8 cars, especially in some of the high speed corners where the drivers were working the steering wheel quite a bit more than the last gen of cars.
I don't really care for the complex drivetrain management either, but I think that will gradually disappear as the drivers and engineers figure out to manage it more simply?

The engine manufacturers pretty much make the rules for the next gen of engines now, as they want to learn something useful for the next generations of road car powertrains, as they spent billions on the last powertrains development.
I read that drivetrain development spending will be limited to $130M per year for a while, so maybe they will concentrate a bit more on the "show" aspect since they aren't dumping quite as much money at it.

As much as we don't like it, eventually reciprocating piston engines will be mostly gone as a practical way to move most vehicles, and F1 is an exciting way to see the results of the R&D battle for future drivetrains.

I wouldn’t have a problem with two teams duking it out at the front of every race. It’s much more exciting than watching Max pull away from the rest of the field and nobody else having a chance at getting first. Those years were brutal. I know a lot of people hated when Mercedes dominated the hybrid era but at least we had two drivers that could win the race and not just one. So if we have a season where 4 different drivers are the ones winning at least that’s better.
I know people got tired of Max winning but you have to admire his driving skills. Put him in one of these new MB's and watch him really bore us.

I actually don’t think he’s as skilled as people think. When his car isn’t 100% perfect he struggles to even get into the top 6 or 7.

And when other drivers have cars that are less than 100% they struggle to finish 15th. Look at Lewis last year. His average was 7th. There are drivers who race their whole careers and never get into the top 5. I would take Max over whiny Russell/ Norris all day everyday. Max’s teammates tell what a crap car he had.

It would be interesting to put Max in a car that is setup optimally for his teammate? Especially a car setup to be much less pointy/oversteering than Max normally likes. I think then the results between his teammates would be closer to what happened in the last Ricciardo teammate season, or the early Perez seasons. My theory is that Max's sim time has allowed him to build up his hand sensitivity and reactions needed to drive a very pointy car, without needing to wait to feel the car actually slip, and since he's gotten seriously into sim racing, he's been way way above any of his teammates level. I think only Alonso has beat his teammates by so much, but he's been with rookies and pay drivers for a while now.

I think F1 cars have always tended to be faster with a pointy setup, and there's not many drivers that can run a whole season with as few mistakes as Max has lately, with a very very pointy F1 car? Schumacher could do it for many years, but not at the end of his career. Leclerc does it well at times, but not as consistently over a whole race/season. Hamilton did it well for a while. Montoya was impressive in the highspeed corners, and Kubica was getting there too.
Guys like Button, Rosberg are good drivers, and they earned their championships, but they can't drive "on edge" as consistently as the best ones IMHO.

Max had the more recent ill-handling, and inferior RBs in contention for championships. Cars that he could corral, but multiple teammates could not.

That's something that others, including WCs like Button, Norris, Rosberg, and others who rode their car advantages to titles couldn't do, which puts Max in the top-tier the others have yet to show they belong.

I doubt he'd do it, but I'd love to see him test an IndyCar, which moves around more, especially under braking, and has to be manhandled around its imperfect behavior. It would suit his old-school thinking about the driver/car relationship more, but his post-F1 path seems to be sports car, and the big enduro races like Le Mans.

That will be interesting as well, if he carries through, but he'll have to develop a greater taste for the energy management tasks that he's recently expressed disdain for, if he aims to drive in the top HyperCar class. They have been a part of the top-level hybrid prototypes since the WEC came into being in 2014.

As well as being more of a team sport, where you share the seat with other drivers, and must work together, and not as a lone wolf with everything tailored to you.

This isn't entirely true. The RB wasn't such a handful until 2024. Before and after that Verstappen's teammates were always top four in the WDC. After he won the 2021 championship they moved to ground effect. The RB didn't dominate in the first year of those regs, but RB began to modify the car to cater to Max and the 2023 version was far faster than the other cars. In 2023 after winning Baku, Checo still thought he would challenge for the WDC and people were calling him king of the streets. Seems like Max took that personally. Starting with the next race in Miami, he methodically destroyed Checo. But Checo was still third in the WDC. Then in 2024 RB went too far in narrowing the performance window and only Max could handle the car.

2021: Max 1st, Checo 4th (behind Mercedes)
2022: Max 1st, Checo 3rd (behind Ferrari)
2023: Max 1st, Checo 2nd
2024: Max 1st: Checo 8th (no man's land)

My first time watching F1, I though the prerace, race and psot were pretty good for the Chinese Race that was on last night.
Congrats to Kimi Antonelli! And George 2nd place finish. I thought it was pretty exciting, and to see the 2 Ferrari cars duke it out, lol... Ive watch Nascar for years, but done with them for over a decade now.

I'm glad you asked this OP, as I was about to start a thread. Current F1 is an absolute JOKE IMHO. I have been an avid fan for decades, but haven't seen anything this season since they went to Apple TV...enough is enough.

Why is F1 partially now Formula E?? What's up with F1 trying to save the planet with fuel savings? Hey F1, we have airplanes, NHRA, top alcohol, pro stock, IMSA, SCCA, NASCAR, etc, etc, etc. You have silenced the once coveted roar of the V10's and any other screaming engine that have blessed the sport. I'm tired of hearing how F1 is trying to set some type of example on energy conservation for a few hours of racing. Even NASCAR being a debacle still had the thunder of the engines.

What's next, all road racing cars need to use a battery for 1/4 of the race to save energy? If F1 had their say it would happen.

The irony is, the cars with the highest budgets, extremely high price tag, with the potential and having the funding of being by far the most exciting going back to all engine, are becoming boring cars to watch. I wish all the drivers the best, I'll catch the results in the news.

You write this like it just started

Been like this for awhile and so far this iteration is actually better than last believe it or not

Not really IMO, this transition has been going on for a little while now yes, but the persistent approach to going "green" and now removing from cable to Apple TV is what really set me off. I love the sport, but I'm not going to spend even more to watch a continously trend away from what made F1 great.

In your defense, the engines do sound a little bit better this season.

How about this....

I get AppleTV with my phone service

The green junk and hybrids were already in place

Oh absolutely, that I'm aware of, again, been watching for decades....needs to go, was hoping the new chassis would eliminate that as a hopeful surprise.

As a young teenager, starting in about 1970, I would go to Watkins Glen every year for the 6 hours and Can-Am. Then the Grand Prix in the fall. Later I would go to Montreal in June for the Grand Prix. When the Hybrid era started, in 2014, that was enough live attendance for me. But I still watched on TV every weekend that I possibly could. This year, I only watch about 7-8 minutes of video hi-lites. The Cosworth v8's are gone, along with the Ferrari, Alfa, Lambo, Honda, Matra V-12's and are never coming back. And no more V-10's. So they have lost me as a customer this year with their Mario Cart f1E racing and the green agenda . But I am not the type of fan f1 is going after. Aged out, if do say so.
When I need a road racing spectator fix, I go to an IMSA event. Multiple classes, sound and sights and long races that are not overpriced.
(thats me and my NA miata in turn 7 at the Glen a few years back)
