Hi, I found out about BITOG from a friend of mine. So far the things I'm reading are very informative and I'm learning the importance and difference of oils.

I originally use the cheapest and whatever was available oil. But then after awhile I started using only plain Jane yellow Pennzoil. My friend was raving about how his oil is purple and said its soo awesome and increased his engines hp, and feels so much better. I was very skeptical and gave it a try. So I got a case of Royal Purple and tried it out. So far its working great. I do notice the engine is much quieter and smoother. The idle doesn't lope as much, and it revs alot smoother. I'm still in the process of seeing how my engine responds to it. But so far so good.

The other oil I'm trying is the Pennzoil Platinum. I tried it because I had good experience with the mineral oil from Pennzoil. I also noticed a huge difference in smoothness immediately over the mineral oil. And same as the Royal Purple in over all characteristics. However I'm starting to notice that after 1000 miles or so it is not as smooth. The Royal Purple seems to remain smoother longer than the Pennzoil Platinum. I'm on my second oil change with Pennzoil Platinum, and I noticed that the oil ends up pretty dark. I do oil changes every 3k miles including filter every 3k miles. I haven't changed the Royal Purple yet. But so far the oil seems cleaner than the Platinum at the same amount of mileage and use.

What are your takes and views on the Pennzoil Platinum. It seems cheaper than many other synthetic oils and pretty available in my area. Maybe I'll try a different filter. I'm currently using a Fram filter.

And I've been trying to find this Green Castrol that my friend spoke of. Says it's hard to find. Do any of the members here know a place that would carry it in South Florida?

Again Hi. ^_^

Oops... just read the note at the top about the "Where to buy" sorry.

Oh and a pic of my Tower of Royal Purple!

I was in Advance Auto earlier and I had the Pennzoil Platinum in my hand. I put it back and went with the Pennzoil blend. I am curious as to others opinions on the platinum as well. I may use it yet, I like the price a lot. There is even a rebate for it at adavance auto as well. Many here don't like the fram filter, but ehh, if you like it, use it.

I almost forgot, welcome.

Then note is at the top in the main forum it says "BEFORE ADDING A NEW TOPIC,PLEASE TRY USING OUR SEARCH FEATURE FOR A RELATED TOPIC WHICH MAY ALREADY HAVE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS. NO "where to buy?" posts in here.Post those threads in Auto & Lubrication General Topics".

... I'm used to changing oil at every 3k miles. Sometimes if my funds allow I try to change earlier than that. I used to know a guy who changed his oil literally every weekend. And sometimes I would use his used oil. But... I still really like the Yellow Pennzoil. But considering the cost of the Platinum. I'd say its not bad. I haven't calculated it yet, but I believe my MPG went up. I hope my truck will last as long as my old Toyota, with the consistant oil changes and quality synthetic oil.

Oh and as far as the Fram filter. I'm not particularly fond of it. I usually try to use the Purolators, and if I'm lucky the Pure Ones. And if I have alot of cash I try to get the OEM filters. I really like the OEM filters from Toyota. I think this Fram filter is causing high oil pressure in my S-10.

nemesis9- start reading over some of the UOAs (used oil analyses) and you'll see that, with a synthetic, even the most anal people on BITOG change their synthetics every 5k mi. It is really a waste to change a synthetic every 3k- no benefit whatsoever over dino at that mileage. Another thing- quieter isn't necessarily better, and an oil that stays cleaner is also not necessarily better- part of an oil's job is to suspend contaminants so an oil that does that well may be cleaning your engine better than an oil that does not.

Castrol Syntec 0-30 is at Auto Zone. If you get some that is a certain serial number, it is made in Germany and is Green. The newer stuff is Gold. There are slight differences between the two, but, I don't know if one is necessarily better than the other. I was just in South Fl. the last two weeks. Every AZ I checked had some Green Syntec...at least, until I cleaned them out!

Nemises: Forget the synthetic and go with a
good DIno oil for 3000 Mile OCI's like
Havoline or Castrol GTX. I do mine every 2000
miles whicj is overkill no doubt but clean
oil is good oil

I was thinking of switching back to Pennzoil. For my pickup, but for my 4-Runner I'm using Royal Purple. You're saying the synthetic lasts longer... What about the filters? So what is the reccommended norm on changing oil and filter with synthetic oils?

To be very very conservative you could go 5000 miles on syn.

If you are dead set on 3000 mile intervals, use conventional oils. - You are throwing away money using synthetic

I also change my oil every 3k miles and wouldn't do it any less often. I engine-brake throughtout the day, I never let the car coast in neutral, and I drive my car very hard (an 03 350Z). I notice as I get to around 4k the oil pressure is a bit lower and when I drain I know I don't get all 5 quarts back out. Couple this with the fact that the dipstick is impossible to get a clean reading off of, and I'd rather be safe than sorry. A few bucks every 3k miles is worth the peace of mind and satisfaction in knowing I can drive my car as hard as I want since I maintain it diligently. $5.99 per quart isn't that bad... My friend uses $8/quart JDM oil.
