I can’t remember my first personal purchase. But do remember going to the parts store in the early 80’s getting a Fram PH8A for my dad. He had a 64 Chevy truck. 400 small block.
You have a good memory. I grew up in the late 70's & 80's in The Bronx. Partied REAL hard. Was lucky I made it home in one piece. Spent quite a few late nights in the ER getting stitched up after a wreck. Any memories are hazy at best. Ask me my 1st type of beer, that would be Miller nip bottles, " booze" would be Tango ( a pre-mixed vodka & orange juice). Not going to get into everything else I was ingesting. So, the answer to the question is no, I don't remember.Good morning folks. I remember I was 15 and I bought a wix filter for my Pontiac sunbird. Bought dad a wix for his 92’ Dakota too. At a small mom and pop auto parts store. Do you remember the first oil filter you bought?

Thanks for your note. My Ford I-6 was the 200 cubic inch. FoMoCo put the FL1A on everything from that small six up to my dad's 351 Windsor V8. Sumps on those were 5 quarts. As I recall oil filters in general were big in the late 60s and 70s, and I remember being surprised at how small they got later.I don't recall the Ford I6 300 having a massive sump, maybe 6 quarts?
So why was the FL1A so large? Did ford expect a lot of sludge or debris?
As to why so large, I recall the filters of various cars of the early 70s tended to be big, presumably due to the technology of the time. Newer media is better, and there are lots of pleats. I don't recall cutting open filters back in the day. I'd be glad to hear from a member who has details on the internals of 1970s oil filters. Thanks for your note. My Ford I-6 was the 200 cubic inch. A version this car was my second filter purchase. I had that car with a V6 and a 4 speed - it was quite the rocking little machine in 85.First car was an air-cooled VW with a rock catcher screen. Second car was a 1974 Capri that took, IIRC, an FL300. I'm sure that I also bought the Sears equivalent.
