Supertech oil filters compared to Wix

I have used Wix filters for many years. My local auto part store that carries Wix is going out of business. They are the only store to my knowledge around here that carries Wix. So it's now almost time to change the oil again. I bought a case of Havoline at Walmart and went to look at there oil filters. After the long dreaded walk in the "orange" aisle with nothing but Fram junk i finally seen a small selection of Supertech filters.

For Wix filters i need filter number 51085 and for Supertech it is ST16. The only difference i can tell without cutting open the can is the size. The Supertech looks to be about half the size of what the Wix is.

Should i be worried about that or is there another Supertech filter that is bigger that would work? I haven't heard anything bad about Supertech so i am hoping they are alright to use. I live in a small town so it is hard to get quality filters such as Wix or Purolator. I have never even seen a Purolator. Everyone around here uses Fram!

As Brett says ...NAPA GOLD is the same as a WIX. If you have to use a SuperTech and want one bigger, use a ST8.

going from wix to super tech.!!! talk about a garbage filter!!! i don't believe it!!! use napa, carquest both are made by wix...but do yourself and your car a big favor and stay away from super tech...one with half a brain can just look at them and see pure junk!!

O'reily's auto parts is a wix dealer.I get mine there.I get mine there. They're great to do buisness with.

Fortunately one with a whole brain would come away from the visual inspection with a more balanced insight. boxcartommie22 is certainly entitled to his opinion and equally entitled to express it on BITOG. However, a few FACTS may be in order: SuperTechs are made by Champion Labs. Champion Labs also makes American Bosch, AC Delco, STP, K&N, and Mobil 1 oil filters. While there're surely media differences, the basic construction details are alike. SuperTechs are decent quality oil filters at an honest price and meet or exceed OEM filtration specs. For WalMart to allow otherwise would open the retailer to a slew of product liability cases testing the depth of its pockets.

Ahhhh! That's what I like about BITOG, the highly rational, scientific technical dissertations

I stopped using Supertech oil filters, mainly because I use plier wrenches to get the filters loose and the thickness of the can must be really thin. I crush them every time. They seemed cheap to me.

NAPA silver, and Motorcraft and PP seemed a little sturdier.

Comparing Wix/Napa Golds to Supertech is like comparing Lincolns to Ford - Lexus to Toyotas... etc. You don't need to go any further to witness the difference than the can thickness or the first thing you see inside the can -- ie... the differences in ADBV (substance & color).

My Napa Golds cost me $1.50 more than a Supertech at fleetfilter.com when buying several air/oil filters to deflect shipping costs.

RayH hit it square on. The ST's are very good filters. The "shorter" ST16 is due to Champion Labs E-Core design. If you have been running a Wix, and there is room for it, The ST8 will easily fit in it's place. It is about 3mm longer than the Wix, and is very likely to have a bit more media in it. I'm running the ST8's on a Sebring, and a Jeep GC. Same bypass specs, and anti-drainback setups on both. The Motorcraft FL1-A is a very large filter that, if there is room, will work also.
ST3614 short, narrow
ST3600 long, narrow
ST16 short, fat
ST 8 long, fat

I don't see how anybody can tell much about the quality of a filter looking at the outside. After all, how does Fram get away with their junk? You can tell a little more, but not everything, by cutting one open. I have cut open a bunch of filters, not including WIX, and I rank them as AC tops, almost every thing else mid pack, and Fram a poor last. If you don't have a lot of choice, ST certainly would be better than Fram. Don't over look Motorcraft if your Wally's stocks the one for your application. No personal experience, but many good comments here seeming based on logic.

The evidence against Fram is skimpy. It is almost non existent condemning any of the other brands including the ST.

I think you can use motorcraft FL1-A, FL200 or FL300, can anyone list all of the motorcraft filters that will work in place of the wix 51085?

Thanks

Go to Wally's. Grab the Motorcraft if they have one, otherwise, the ST. Save the old WIX you take off. Next oil change, cut open the WIX and the ST or MC and compare them. Measure the Media area and eyeball the thickness, The more area and thickness the better. Other perimeters are harder to tell. Report details back here maybe with pictures. If the ST is the new Ecore, it will be very different inside, but remember, oil filters are about the media and ADBV, not the end caps, center tubes, or outer shell.

Oil filters in general are not the big deal some here make them out to be. After all, how many of your local Fram users are junking cars because of engine failure?

Thanks guys for all the replies. I change my oil every 3k so i think the Supertech will be fine. I am going to use it this one time since i already bought it. I will probably order online from now on.

Are Carquest and Napa filters really Wix? I was just at Carquest and asked them if they had Wix filters and they said no.

They should have two quality level of filters. The more expensive one is WIX.
