First Oil Change Question

Thanks, sayjac. The change was made @ 7245 miles with Mobil Supreme 5-30. Now I guess I can get into the considerations of synthetic vs. "dino". The recommended changes are every 3750, so I presume Nissan prefers dino.

Nissan no longer has a preference for oil type.

Also, the intervals are 7500, not 3750. 3750 is the correct interval if and only if you operate the vehicle under severe service. I'd say the majority of people operating under the normal schedule.

Dino or synthetic should work fine. Unless you drive in severe conditions (as defined by your OM) the great majority of the time, perhaps you'll want to split the difference and go ~5k or ~6 months. That's been my preference for my 03 2.5L Altima, that has seen only dino up till now, but that's just me.

That's up to you, but since you seem to have a good awareness, of the need for regular oil and filter changes, you're on the right track. Maybe you will think about getting some ramps, picking your own oil/filter and DIY. Of course, you can pick/bring your own oil too, and get it done somewhere.

Actually the 7500 mile interval applies only to "highway driving in temperate conditions" according to the OM.

Severe service includes any one of the following: repeated short trips; stop-and-go traffic; dusty, muddy , rough or salt spread roads; towing; and lengthy idling (read: city traffic).

My guess is that 95% of vehicles are operated under what manufacturers define as severe service. Obviously the 3750 mark is conservative, but every vehicle I've ever owned was severe service according to those defintions.

Here is a cut/paste from the 2010 Nissan Service/Maintenance Guide:

Quote:
SCHEDULE 1 (more severe operating
conditions), every 3,750 miles or 3
months, whichever comes first
Use Schedule 1 if you primarily operate your
vehicle under any of these conditions:
Repeated short trips of less than 5 miles in
normal temperatures or less than 10 miles in
freezing temperatures
Stop-and-go traffic in hot weather or lowspeed
driving for long distances
Driving in dusty conditions or on rough,
muddy, or salt-spread roads
Towing a trailer, or using a camper
or car-top carrier

The key word is primarily. Occasional vehicle operation under the listed conditions does not mean you will need to follow the 3-mo/3750 interval. For example, if 2/3 of your driving consisted of 15 mile commutes to work, while the remaining 1/3 consisted of driving 2 miles to church, then the 7500 mile interval will still be fine.
