Finally able to pay it forward!

Went out for coffee and good talk with a friend this past Monday evening. He pulled into the parking spot and his door was immediately blocked by a very whiny and tattered older man who pleaded for $20 to buy food.

My friend is very generous, and has a big heart for the poor, but had no cash.

I had only a $5 bill and a loonie ($1 coin) and some small change so gave him $6.

He didn't thank me at all, but rather kept asking us to go down the street to an ATM and get him his $20.

We didn't. I don't know whether or not he was legitimately hungry, or a scammer.

So it goes. I do donate annually to both the Salvation Army and Siloam Mission, both of which provide food and shelter for the homeless. My wife donates to another food bank as well. Perhaps I should increase my donation a little bit instead, and refuse the beggars. It's always hard to know ...

I don’t mind helping out if I truly know they need it. I was somewhere with my friend and his mom once and she had offered one of those people a burger from McDonald’s and he laughed and said no lady I just want money and then got mad we would not give him any. Glad she didn’t give in for that.

Years ago I was sitting in front of a pizza and hoagie shop waiting for my hogie to be made, and a young man walking by asked for money so he could buy food. I told him I dont carry money, but I use my credit card to pay for things, and after my hoagie is done being made, if you want to go into that McDonalds across the street I will buy you what ever you want to eat. He just looked mad and walked away.

My dad taught me never give a bum money, they only spend it on booze.

Now days also drugs.

Another time a street person took my offer, I bought him what he wanted, and a McDonalds gift card with enough for 2 more meals. After he sat down with his food, I gave him the gift card, said have a nice day, and I left.
