Filters for Synthetic Oil

"NAPA's Ultra-Filtration Filter, Designed For Use With Synthetic Oils."

That's exactly how it's printed on the NAPA Platinum filter box.

It also says this:

"CONTENTS MADE IN USA"

Yet its got a 50% @ >20 micron rating? Thats not very good. By comparison, Fram's Ultra synthetic-glass-media oil filter has a 99% @ >20 microns. Why use a Wix XP or the same NAPA Platinum?

3000 not so much, but folks here (myself include) run synthetic oil with MC filters for 5000 miles. Any higher than that and I would use M1.

Like I said, it depends on how far you are wanting to go.

I was thinking 7000 miles +-. I would like to get 300,000 miles on the car. Don't know if that's possible as the Fiesta does not have much overdrive like my 99 Tracer which had about 33% overdrive. Our Corollas had that amount as well with about the same size engine pulling more weight than the Fiesta.

I am sending an oil sample off to Blackstone in a few days. I may well go for 5000 mile intervals.

You mean you change the MC Filter at 5000 miles, or complete oil change?

Complete oil change. I go by the oil life monitor.

Oil life monitor? Wondering if I have one on my Fiesta. Does it indicate by how many miles driven, elapsed time since last oil change, or does it actually [censored] the quality of the oil?

Reason I ask is that "Change oil soon" indicator came on at about 4500 miles. Dealer has been bugging me repeatedly to do the first oil change since about 3000 miles, eventhought Ford states the first oil change should be at 1 year or 10,000 miles - whichever comes first. My last car was a 99 Mercury tracer which we got brand new. Only got 200,000 miles on it before the engine went south. We had Castrol oil changed every 3000 miles at Jiffy Lube. I suspect their filter shortened the engines life. I am back to doing my own oil changes now.

I could assume that any filter listed by Autozone for a 2013 Fiesta would be good for Synthetic oil, but I am not going to take their word for it.

Is your car out of warranty now?

I'm more concerned about the overall construction of the filter than I am about the micron rating. That Platinum filter is a solidly constructed filter. In stark contrast, that Fram Ultra has way too many discrepancies for my liking.

2. Duel paper and synthetic media (another Fram cost cutting measure)
3. Brown synthetic media (looks like plumbers drain scum)
4. Leaf spring (rather have a coil spring)
5. Plastic Bypass valve (looks cheesy)
6. Itty bitty inlet holes (possible oil restriction)

^^^ All unfounded "discrepancies". The Ultra smokes the XP/Platinum.

I like the Royal Purple and NAPA Platinum filters. They both have fine mesh (window screen style) back up screen. The media is all one type synthetic and it's white!

Yeah, and it sucks at 50% @ 20 microns ...

I figure a filter that is 50% @ 20 microns is about equivalent to a filter doing 90~95% @ 40 microns ... a little worse than a Purolator L14610 for instance, which is 97.5% @ 40 microns.

The XP/Platinum isn't really any worse than the OEM Toyota filters, but it's still worse than OEM Honda filters at the 20 micron efficiency point.

IIRC, it accesses the quality of the oil. I am sure we could get more miles from the oil if the truck wasn't short tripped to death. The OLM has a few other settings that I cant remember for sure.. The truck is driven by my dad and he just tells me to change it when it says it needs changed. Its about 500 miles away as of now.

Sorry if I missed this, but is this the factory fill that is still on your engine? I would personally change it if it is telling you to especially if its the factory fill. What kind of driving does your car see? City or highway driving mostly?

***And if your OLM says to change it at 4500 miles, the MC synthetic blend along with the MC filter will work for you just fine. I would run that with my dads truck, but he wants full synthetic. Plus we have 2 other cars that use Pennzoil Platinum 5w20. One of which is the oil consuming Chrysler 3.8... so its good to have some spare oil handy for top offs. Its just handy to have one type.

2. Not the Ultra.

I still don't get the fascination with that graph (and assuming it is correct of course). I mean, filtering efficiency doesn't mean if a filter will catch a particle, it means (statistically speaking) when, right? Even a very low efficiency filter will eventually catch all particles, assuming the efficiency for a given size is greater than zero. And as the filter ages it will catch smaller and smaller particles.

And no one has ever posted any time information have they? Let's say an efficency is 50%, doesn't that mean in two passes it is 75%? How long does two passes through the filter take?

Or do I just not get it? That may be the case of course

Fram Ultra is for Synthetic Oil and is a good oil filter.

I think Fram Ultra is best as far as price and easy to find and its a very good filter.

Can you elaberate on the discrepancies of the FRAM ULTRA?

It has steal end caps.... Silicone ADBV the bypass even has seal on the leaf spring that connects to the bottom of the catridge.

Now I agree the bypass could of been better made but it does the job... FRAM Proved that on its proving ground video.

So tell me what you do not like????

I think its the best for the $ and ease to find and all around the best amd for the price you can replace at each OCI if you want. Its not a 15$ filter or 13$ filter like some over priced filters... WM sells for 8$... thats great deal and a great oil fitler.

now you tell me what you meant.

Thanks
