How do I determine which filters are for Synthetic Oil? The Autozone in my small town Has a seleection of oil filters for my car. The only brands I would consider are Mobil-1, Bosh, and Motorcraft. I am pretty sure the Mobil-1 is for Synthetic oil. I see no indication that the others are.

I could assume that any filter listed by Autozone for a 2013 Fiesta would be good for Synthetic oil, but I am not going to take their word for it.

You can use any filter with synthetic oil but you need to make sure that your oil filter doesn't exceed it's useful life just because your using synthetic oil.

For instance you may choose to run Mobil 1 EP oil for 15,000 miles since it's rated for15k, bbut if you use a Fram extra guard your filter is only rated at 5,000 miles, so you need 3 filters per oil change. Some people do similar thing like run the oil for 15k and change the filter halfway through with something rated for up to 10k miles like a Fram Tough Guard or Wix. You would be smarter to buy one Fram Ultra rated for 15,000 miles and change each at 15k.

Some of our members change oil more frequently but leave filters like Fram Ultra on there for the full 15,000 miles.

ALL filters are for synthetic oil. However, all filters aren't for extended drains associated with synthetic.

BTW, the Purolator PureOne is identical to the Bosch filter, and the Motorcraft is very close to that, and also made by Purolator.

If there is an Advance or Walmart nearby, Fram Ultra is also worth considering and is very different from the orange can of death. Advance also has the PureOne.

Napa Gold and Platinum filters are also very good. Napa Gold is Wix, and Napa Platinum is Wix XP.

Doesn't Autozone also carry K&N? They are just as good as the M1 filter and possibly made by the same company.

Nothing wrong with Motorcraft filters as of now. No media tears have been reported here yet.

They are a great value. Depending on your OCI, Id consider those.

I agree pretty much with all the other responses. It is correct that you don't have to use a special filter for synthetic oil but it doesn't make any sense to spend the money for more expensive oil and then use an el cheapo filter. I know that Mobil 1 filters are very good and people here on BITOG also seem to like the Fram Ultra. Amsoil also makes excellent filters.

Maybe I should have asked how to deterine which filters are good for extended oil change intervals. I thought it was understood that people using Synthetic oil are not going to be changing oil every 3000 miles.

3000 not so much, but folks here (myself include) run synthetic oil with MC filters for 5000 miles. Any higher than that and I would use M1.

Like I said, it depends on how far you are wanting to go.

The Mobil 1 and K&N used to be identical, however K&N recently outsourced production to Korea, so the K&N is now inferior to the Mobil 1. K&N is mid 80S efficiency, Mobil 1 should be mid 90s.

M1, Fram and Bosch all make extended use filters. An extended range filter doesn't necessitate the use of synthetic oil. I use Mobil 1 M103 filters for 15K+ miles, usually 3 oil changes using conventional oil.... This gets me thru the winter without having to roll under the car to change the filter.

Mobil1 oil filters are essentially the same as Fram ToughGuards, now that both are made in the same factory and both have very close to the same performance (both 99% @ 20 microns, exceptionally good). Fram ExtraGuards even have some glass fiber blended in to give 95% @ 20 microns, so not a bad choice their either. Wix (same as NAPA Gold) also have some glass fibers blended in, resulting in almost identical performance to the Fram ExtraGuards. All would work well with synthetic oils up to the manufacturer's recommended oil change interval, and likely beyond, yet if you're not sure, go ahead and change the oil filter.

Almost any filter can be used with synthetic oil if OCI is less than 7-8k, when OCI is extended to 10k or longer than Fram Ultra is a good choice. If Fram Ultra is used with dino at 5-6k OCI then it can be used for 2-3 OCI's.

I was thinking 7000 miles +-. I would like to get 300,000 miles on the car. Don't know if that's possible as the Fiesta does not have much overdrive like my 99 Tracer which had about 33% overdrive. Our Corollas had that amount as well with about the same size engine pulling more weight than the Fiesta.

I am sending an oil sample off to Blackstone in a few days. I may well go for 5000 mile intervals.

You mean you change the MC Filter at 5000 miles, or complete oil change?

Complete oil change. I go by the oil life monitor.
