filter guy , could you explain the value for larger oil filters and how that benifits your engine...forinstance i use the much smaller FL820S(3.6-4.1" HIGH filter for my fords.the filters i posted are anywhere from 5.2"-5.6" high!!

No...

I'm not sure what your question is really.

I've only recently found this forum due to a car nut buddy of mine. I've read some of the things in here and refrained from comment because there might be a high probability of an interesting discussion...lol

But the business of using a larger filter is one i'm still struggling with. I have read in here why some think doing this is a better option for them. And it might be if they use their vehicle as something other than a daily driver. (ie. higher performance. Maybe even longer oil drains)

However, I spent a lot of time in the trucking industry where the "standard" oil change is 12-15,000 miles. Yet routinely these engines go twice that long between oil changes. And usually the fleet is doing oil analysis, but not always.

Mobil sells Delvac1 to the trucking industry and they will, under certain conditions and oil analysis, let you go 75,000 miles between oil changes. With no requirement for a filter change.
The trucking industry doesn't have the "option" of a larger filter. Yes, some do have different versions of by-pass filters. But the "standard" oil change remains the same..12-15,000 miles. And using a by-pass filter is not a requirement to go the 75K. Now ask yourself, how would a filter last 75K, when the normal change interval is 12-15K? Maybe it's because there is lots of life left. ( and rest assured Mobil has had testing done to make sure various brands of truck engine oil filters will last that long under varying conditions.)

So when some in here worry about what the larger filter is for their automotive engine, i'm not sure what they want to accomplish.

If you change your oil as recommended..3,000 miles (severe driving) or 6,000 miles (normal) and the OEM filter is X height, don't you think enough testing has been done to make sure that the filter will last at least that long?

I've mentioned before in another thread, that the company I used to work for routinely tests "used" filters to see how much life is left. Rarely does a filter come back to the lab where the filter gets close to 50% of the life used, when it's changed per schedule. So my head scrathing is why go to a larger one when a "normal" one has so much life left? Especially when those in here are probably pretty adamant about changing their oil and filter at recommended intervals ( probably before). The small amount of extra oil would provide extra oil additives to help protect the engine, especially with longer drain intervals. But for standard drain intervals..the regular filter would be more than sufficient.

Basically, filter companies build all those different brands because various companies want different marketing and selling points. It lets the consumer feel good with his purchase because it was a conscious decision on his part to pick a particular brand.

The only caveat I would use as a reason not to, is if the vehicle is a new car under warranty, then using a part number not cataloged for the engine would give the filter company and OEM an "out" if they wanted to deny the warranty. Even though the part number one chooses is one that fits the same "brand" car, it's not the one cataloged for the particular engine.

Once your out of warranty..it's all on you, so you can do anything you want. Make yourself happy.....

PS: If the filter is mounted at the bottom of the engine, make sure the longer one does not cause a different problem. One OEM, who shall remain nameless but has a bowtie, was developing a different engine. Used a "long" filter. During testing they leaked. Reason being they rubbed the ground under certain conditions. ( RR tracks, speed bumps, etc caused bottoming out and the filter ended up being lower than the axle ). The OEM went to a shorter filter specifically for this reason.

thank you for your reply, i was wanting to use a larger filter because of less restriction, more oil to your engine and more media and the stuoutness of these filter compared to auto filters. iam using fleetguards lf3315 for my lincoln and expedition also the baldwin b 286..my crown vic uses the reg filter because a larger one doesan't fit in the space and it uses fleetguards lf 3681
