filter for unusual car

I have a 1964 Fiat Abarth racer replica which uses the motor from an Autobianchi A112 (manufactured in Italy in the early 1970's).
It has an adapter between the filter and the block to send the oil to a second, remote filter and oil cooler.

I bought the car in Germany and the filter on it is a Purflux.

It seems like there are SO many filters made that I needn't have any shipped from Europe.

Can't I just go to PepBoys with my old filter and find one with the same threads, gasket diameter, an anti-drainback valve, and the same or larger can size and put it on?

That way I can use the info on this site to choose a quality one.

Being a European engine I would but a Mahle or Mann filter on it with the same thread size and diameter. This is what I did with my Austin Mini which didn't originally come with a spin-on style oil filter.
 
Look here. If this filter works for your engine ..then it's a common 3/4-16 thread engine.

Napa has a board with most of the filter thread on them (mine does, anyway).

You're over-complicating this. If you have the part number from the filter you have now, just take that number and give it to the person at the counter. They type the number into the computer and find the equivalent filter they sell. That's the way we do it at Napa, anyway.

That depends. Not all x'ref's work with all numbers.

..but you may be right. It's most likely a 3/4-16 thread filter. That's if Fiat is any indication according to WIX Italy loves 3/4-16 filters.

I guess I assumed that no one here will have ever heard of a Purflux filter or of an Autobianchi A112. And the thread on the adapter might not be the same as came on the car.
I'll call Napa and see if they have a cross reference for a Purflux filter

You could just post the number (cough-cough = ahem grunt cough) HERE and there are quite a few xref utilities out there to use.

What brand filter is that?

Interestingly, the Fram PH4478 found by Gary Allan shows as "part number not found" on Fram's website. That filter fits only cars made after April 1981.

For goodness' sake, man; just tell us what filter you've got, and we'll help you find a replacement.

Oh, and the R122 I referenced is a Purflux.

I'm sorry-- I'm still at work and calls to my house fail to find anyone to go look at the car to tell me.

Yep ..common 3/4-16 thread 2.7-2.8 X 2.3-2.4 gasket filter. Most popular thread and gasket size in the world.

What's uncommon for it is the burst strength and the "squat" length/diameter ratio. It's short and stout. It doesn't appear to have any unusual bypass valve rating to it ..but I figure that they have some reason for the oddity.

We had a Delorean owner who paid $10 for on line filters through some Delorean site. He was happy to be able to go down to any parts store for the replacements.

The Purflux is truly an interesting filter. The convolutions would appear to make it simulate a much larger filter.

This filter is a pretty standard and common filter used on TONS of applications. At least some of the filter mfg's cross it over to that popular filter while a few have a specific one for the import applications. Either way these filters should all work no problems. I did not bother with every filter mfg out there just some of the more popular, quality, and readily available ones. I did not bother with cheap filters like the STP line due to the application nor Fram because they stink!

Here are some filters for you. Not all the filter mfg's have a cross to that brand/# BUT some do. You can then use that # to check with the other filter mfg's to get their part # if they don't have the cross to the mfg & part # you have( old parts guy trick ). Here are some filters that should work for you. They either A) cross directly to the filter mfg and number you gave, B)cross to the Wix filter # 51189, or C) cross to the Champ or other filter brand #'s that were crossed to your #( did you get all that?

Wix = 51189 OR 51068( 51189 is the direct cross to your filter brand & # 51069 crosses to the Champ filter # below which came up as the cross for your specific filter brand and part # )

Amsoil = EAO96 OR EAO42( these #'s cross over to some of the filter #'s above - no direct cross to your # or the Wix 51189 )

You should be able to get a filter out of this list somewhere near you. Spec wise these filters are right there for you. ONly variance I see is a slightly different can size among them, some slight filtration rating differences, and some variance in the burst PSI for the casing. The base gasket diameters should be fine, the flow rate matches up, the by pass valve PSI is good, and they all have ADV's. Any of these should work for you.

Baldwin vs Purolator?

It looks like I can source a Baldwin filter at a local heavy equipment dealer. The Purolator is only available in their base line, not the PureOne.

I have confidence in the Baldwin because it's what the Ferrari community started using after Fram turned to junk and some UFI filters burst open upon startup.

Also, Baldwins seem to be respected on this site.

Any reason I should do something else?
 
Baldwin's standard filters are like most others, imo. The HPG line(high performance glass) are up there with the better filters. No reason not to use them.

I'd be temped to just use a FL1A sized filter right off the shelf at any parts store. If there's some need to simulate the Purflux added surface area, and you've got room, something like a 51776 filter would work. It's LONG. There is an even bigger (in total volume) Wix offering in the 3/4-16 thread.
