Wix 51410 as a transmission filter?

I am installing a remote filter in the trans cooling circuit. Of the Ford style filters, my research points to the Wix 51410 or Baldwin BT8301 as the best choice. I do not want the restriction of an anti-drainback valve, or I would use the Baldwin B2 or equiv.. A bypass valve would be nice, but I can't find that without the anti-drainback valve. The cooler circuit has an internal bypass should the filter plug, so it would still lube the transmission, it just wouldn't cool (OK since I have a temp gauge).

The Parker LFS 22835 setup I have seen in other posts is very nice, but I don't want to go that far.

If anybody can point out a better choice, find flaws in my logic, or has any info about the above filters, I would appreciate it.

Have you considered installing a bypass filter instead? An engine oil filter will cause considerable pressure drop in your system and it won't catch dirt particles less than ~20 microns(they do the most damage). Total cost was maybe $60.

It's basically the same amount of work as a remote filter but you'll get far better filtration.

If you'd rather stick with the remote filter, use one with the largest media and least pressure drop. There's an oil filter study back on the home page where they tested various filters for pressure drop.
 
Thanks for the reply. For what I'm trying to do, I need a full flow filter. I'm trying to prevent the large debris from a future torque converter failure from reaching the transmission hard parts. The small particles I will try to minimize with frequent fluid changes.

Unfortunately, from my unscientific testing (put it on the adapter and try to blow through it), the oil filters with an anti drainback valve in them require a fair bit of pressure to unseat the AD valve. With this Ford style adapter, all the filters I've found that are OK for use with transmission fluid have an AD valve, except this one. Of course this one is a shorty, not the XLong I was hoping to find.

It does state that it is full-flow, and is used on many tractor and heavy equipment hydrostatic drives and hydraulic systems, so I assume it must be capable of reasonable volume. But I am assuming and that so often causes trouble. I am hoping for some wisdom before I try the next step of buying one and pumping through it.

I wouldn't use a "blow test" to measure ADBV resistance. You are not a mechanical pump. You should have no problem using a ADBV equipped filter. It would also be good to make sure it has a bypass just in case something catastrophic occurs and clogs the filter(failure).

The mild resistance shouldn't be an issue. And, haven't it might allow more mounting options since filter doen't need to be perfectly straight up/down.

What transmission? In some, ATF exiting the cooler is all done with work, and headed straight for the pan. This is why additional coolers, filters, plumbing for senders.... can be added, using OEM cooler plumbing, without affecting the AT operation. Just make sure you top off the ATF for the additional capacity of the filter and associated plumbing. Grab the factory trans/service manual and study the fluid flow.

Try the wix 51773.
 
The big WIX catalog at a parts store will give the applications for each filter. You'll see some listed as Lube, some listed as Lube or Transmission, and some as only Transmission. It will also list the thread and gasket diameter.

Baldwin will have the same thing in their catalog.
