i been doing alot of research on baldwin and now i have a huge question. every filter for my car (91 honda accord ex 2.2l)

...every filter for my car calls for a 12-15 psi bypass (fram, mobil 1, supertech, purolator). now if every filter calls for 12-15 psi bypass, why does baldwin call for a 20 psi bypass?
 
Probably because this filter also fits Mitsubishi applications, which I believe typically call for a bypass valve setting which is a little higher, around 16-20 psi.

AFAIK, Hondas typically use filters with a lower setting of about 8-11 psi, and for your Honda, I'd look for a filter with this setting.

If you lookup an oil filter for a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse V6 on the Wix website you'll see that the filter (Wix 51064) has the same thread size as your Honda, but a higher bypass valve setting. For the Honda they specify Wix 51334 with the lower bypass valve setting.

Now if you look on the ACDelco website, it'll specify the same oil filter for that Mitsu and your Honda--a filter with the lower 8-11 psi spec, the PF1127.
 
thanks. i understand now but its odd that baldwin does not have a filter dedicated to the honda's needs. your right my car is 8-11 psi, but i thought it was 8-12, haha its somewhere near there. ill ask them if they can find me a filter with the same characteristics that i need for my honda. if not then o well ill just stick with purolator.
 
i did a little playing wiht their cross reference page and i typed in the standard fram filter size for my accord which is ph3593a. it came up with nothing for my car. only mazda, kubota, and isuzu.

but i did something and i found that these 2 filters are completly identical with differnt bypasses
b421 (14 psi)
b227---origional for my car.(20psi)


these are the nearest i found, 14 psi drain back.

On the Baldwin site, if you search for a cross-reference to the Wix 51334 (what Wix recommends for your Honda) you get three results:

B227 - Mitsubishi (20 psi)
B421 - Isuzu (14 psi)
B301 - Subaru (8 psi)

The threads are all M20 X 1.5, and the canister dimensions are the same, but I don't know if the gasket diameters are the same...

I guess you should ask them directly?

i guess asking them directly is my best bet. i forgot about that gasket size. hopefully they will respond to me, man its the weekend though hahaha. if not ill go there myself and look at both filters and compare. ill keep ya updated

I just checked for my 1998 Honda Accord V6. Baldwin calls for a B1421 (14 psi bypass) and Wix calls for a 51334 (8-11 psi bypass) as previously mentioned. The Hastings (made by parent Baldwin) is the LF461, which also has the Baldwin 14 psi bypass.

To list a filter for a specific engine, the aftermarket filter makers reverse-engineer the OEM filter. After they evaluate the OEM filter, they then either manufacture a filter that meets the specs they determined, or they pick a filter already in their product line that matches somewhat. Some filter makers choose a smaller number of filters in their product line and make more compromises in their recommendation. Other filter makers choose to come closer to the OEM spec and have more filters in their line.

All that said, both Baldwin/Hastings and WIX have very extensive catalogs (both are about an inch thick), and they come up with different filter specs for the same engine. Go figure...!

Anyway, I trust all the name you mentioned, and I think all the listed filters will work very well for you.

I have noticed that on the Baldwin site also. At least they give you the filter setting. I don't think that going a few pounds hgher is a big deal if you change your filter regularly and/or you get a larger than stock one. I would rather go higher on the bypass settting than lower. However even I would be a little fearful of going with a 20 psi bypass one if an 8-11 psi is called for.
 
The only safe way to cross-reference is to start from the engine's OEM filter each time. When you cross-reference a cross-reference, you can go in a circle and come back to a different place than you started due to the compromises many filter companies make in their recommendations...cross the OEM to Baldwin, cross the Baldwin to WIX, cross the WIX to Fram, etc., and see if the last filter crosses to the OEM...often it does not.

If I understand his comments correctly (correct me if I'm wrong) Bob feels that flow is very important.. So if the car maker wanted a lower bypass setting (say, 8-11 psi) I would recommend against using an oil filter with a higher setting. This might reduce oil flow during cold starts, when flow through the bypass valve might be important.

I do know that Honda is using Fram to manufacture many of their OE oil filters, and as we've seen on Bob's tests, those flow like crazy... I suspect that the cheap bypass valve on those things is partially open (leaking) most of the time!

try the wix 51344 and see if it fits. i know my 91 civic will not take a ph3593a or 51334, but will take a ph3593 (now the ph6811) or 51344.
 
for the wix 51344 it fits and its actually for the honda too. but it still has a 20 psi bypass. its the baldwin b161-s

the ph 611 crosses with the origional b227 for the honda with a 20 psi.

im still awaiting baldwins response.

im going to call honda and get their serial numbers and cross reference it with baldwin and see what i turn up. i dont see any surprises though.

so the ph3593a is also ph6811?? since when?

i called honda and they told me their OEm part number. 15400pt7005 is their number and it crosses with the b1421. 14psi bypass not bad. this is the only filter i found that fits acura and honda, the others had applications like mazda suburu and stuff so this has to be the right filter. this filter crosses with frams 3593a and all the other ones, so i think i found it. baldwin hasnt replied at all though.

odd aint it? ken2 gave a good point. well what i did was i started playing with the site and cross referencing every filter known for my car (acdelco, supertech fram etc) and when i crossed the old filter that was supertech for my car st2808 it came up to b421 with a 14 psi bypass. i went to frams site and typed in baldwins cross reference and it came up to the standard ph3593a. so i guess this is the nearest possible. everything is the same, now i just got to check the gasket.

maybe they made the bypass that high because of the oil filter itself is constructed a little differnt, thats why its a little higher than normal. im still waiting for a response from them.
 
i emailed baldwin about a week and a half ago and i still havent got a response from them. any one had a problem wiht them? i thought they had a good reputation...i tried 2 times to email them.
