How do I find out if my 2003 Nissan Pathfinder with a vq35de engine needs a filter with anti drainback valve and a bypass valve in the filter , I have been using the OEM nissan filters , I dont know what is in them. is there a chart or way of finding out .

If you are using the OEM Nissan filter for your SUV then you are fine regardless. It will have what your truck needs.
I did a quick look on AutoZone's site.. Looks like your truck would take the Fram PH7317 which has the ADBV built-in.
*Also if your truck needed one, but the filter didnt have it.. you would hear it at every start-up. Lol!

Te reason I was concerned about the drain back valve , is because I have a oil pressure type timing chain tensioner in the baby and I want to get the most mileage out of it . Thanks sounds good.

Just buy a napa gold or fram ultra fioter and rest assured.
An OEM or an aftermarket listed for your vehicle/engine will have one if needed. The better ones are silicone.

Depends on the position of the filter. If the oil filter threads are straight up, like my daughter's Dodge Caliber, there's no need for it as the filter stays full.
Different story on my Impreza as the threads are down. Even then, the oil still drains out after a while. Just my theory

I agree that if you get a filter that is recommended for your application it should have the required ADBV and BPV (and work well).
I've never had a problem using a non OEM (recommended) oil filter. My ZX-2 with the Zetec engine originally called for a Motorcraft FL 2005 but was later changed to a FL 400. It runs (and lasts) equally well on either filter even though the 2005 seems to have an additional ADBV mechanism inside the filter. (It seems that Ford just wanted to consolidate and stop making the 2005 so they spec'd the 400..I don't know why they no longer thought the additional ADBV was needed) At any rate I can still buy a Fram 8316 if I want that additional ADBV.

You don't "need" an ADBV, but every filter I've come across for these applications has one. The bypass is in the filter, not the block.
Warstud: Wix used to make them that way for the small block Chevies, wtihout ADBV and without bypass. I know the current Wix for those still has no bypass valve, but I'd have to check in person to see whether there's an ADBV.

I thought that all spin-on filters have a anti-drain back valve. The Wix site referenced above shows that the proper filter for this vehicle is #57356 which does have both the anti-drain back valve and a bypass valve set at 8 to 11 psi. If you click on the filter number on the Wix site, it will bring up the filter technical specifications.
