It cross referenced to the same filters used by my 2003 Nissan Maxima actually. Wondering what would be a good choice for the bike. It's an air cooled 4 cylinder engine. Nothing too crazy, but I just bought it brand new and want it to last. I'm not opposed to paying about $10 or so for a filter. I've run Bosch on previous bikes because the black looks good, and they seem to be high quality. Would this be a good choice? Or the top level Fram?

Thanks!

Go with the genuine Honda one, that way you won't be second guessing your choice

Fram ultra seems to be a favorite for regular cars. How about for this application? Overkill? I plan on running synthetic oil and following recommended oci. First oil change is at 600 miles so I may as well buy the stuff now and have it ready to go.

Many, many miles done on ST7317 and an HDEO on Honda's. Yes, yours is air cooled, no I don't think it makes a difference. I did the same thing long ago on my Suzuki Katana 1100, their air/oil cooled in-line 4. Always hated Suzy's odd filter thread size, changed the stub the filter screws on to, and used the 6607/7317 variant for years. That and Rotella, and the bike will outlast you.

Been running nothing but Rotella T6 5w-40 and PureOne filters on my Kawasaki 500 for more than 36,000 miles. The oil comes out so clean when I change it at the end of the season that I feel guilty for wasting it. Filter number at the moment is PL14459, but the stock size is PL14610. The 14459 is shorter and fatter and has more media. I've dissected a bunch of them and never seen anything close to a tear, and I have used them on various cars for years too. Cut open a bunch the other day and saw nothing. The Fram Ultra would be a great option and I might go with one next time.

Lots of guys in Honda forums are using the Ultra on these bikes. There is no such thing as overkill in oil filters (JMHO) filters are cheap, engines are expensive!

I've dissected and measured the media on both the PL14610 & the PL14459, and the PL14610 actually has more media. Yeah, it 'looks' like the PL14459 would have more media, but it doesn't.

PL14610 = 105 sq-in
PL14459 = 85 sq-in

Interesting! One other factor I seem to recall is that for some reason the PureOne 14610 was specced at 99.9% at 40 microns, while the 14459 was at 20 microns. Here's an old thread on that http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubb...0_differ_from_P

Since you've obviously dissected carefully some PureOne's have you ever seen a torn one? I haven't on my personal filters yet.

I don't know how large of a filter your bike can accept but my Honda VT1100-T can run the Baldwin B161-S(3 1/32 X 4) and I run a B199(3 X 5 1/8) on my old '99 Valkyrie. Baldwin makes 5 or 6 filters that might fit your bike like a B1402(2 9/16 X 3 1/2) or B1431(2 21/32 X 4) or the B161-S if you have the room for it.

Yes, the 14459 has a better efficiency over the 14610 as discussed in the thread you linked to. Also, the 14459 has a coil spring on the bypass valve vs. the flat spiral spring on the 14610.

Yes, I have seen a torn 14459 way back in May 2011 ... but it was on a passenger car and not a motorcycle. Motorcycles probably have less oil volume from the oil pump than most cars do, so that would help reduce the chances of tearing.

There were 12 reported torn 14459s in the spreadsheet, and maybe a few more than shown since the spreadsheet wasn't maintained for very long.

I'd still recommend the Fram Ultra over almost any other filter. Those things are bulletproof with synthetic media designed for synthetic oil. XG7317 matches the PL14610 and XG3593A matches the PL14459. Spray paint it black if it matters to you. Probably cheaper than whatever the dealer sells too.
