'Favorite oil' before joinig BITOG

Yup, so far, GTX, M1 and then Valvoline appear to be by far, the old favorites.

Growing up, it was Valvoline (white bottle) for a couple decades. Period.

Once I struck out on my own, it was PYB for a decade.

Once I could afford "nice" vehicles, it was QSUD for the truck du jur, and MC 5w-20 for the Taur-as. Or what ever semi-syn 5w-20 was on sale for the Fore-Tore as s car. Gack I hated that car. If I had to do it over again, I would have used sand instead of oil to force myself to replace it sooner. It couldn't get through 6 months without breaking down and costing me $1k or more. That was a "quality is job 1" era car. heh. They did a quality job on me for that one.

Now I'm experimenting. M1 and PU. QSUD is no longer cheap enough to make it a no-brainer.

A couple pages later and GTX is still leading.

I guess this thread indicates despite how stupid Castrol's advertising has consistently been over the years, it apparently works!

My oil of choice was Havoline. This was pre-Katrina and oil was priced decent. I was always buying three or four cases at a time, at 99 cents per quart. When I purchased my Dodge GC in 2005, it showed unusual usage. That lead me to BITOG and I soon switched to Pennzoil Platinum. It was cheaper than Mobil 1. I currently use Mobil 1 because it is priced the same at Wally World. Now that my van has 178k miles, I will use what ever synthetic I can get on sale. This last OCI, it was 5w/30 G-Oil, purchased for $3/quart.

Before BITOG, Mobil 1 was my oil of choice. Then it was Chevron, then Havoline, then Valvoline and now PYB.

Another old GTX fan here! Funny this thread came up now because I was just thinking how I kinda wanna use it again for old times sake, haha (I'm a new member here but I had been lurking for quite awhile). Is it bad if I feel like I just shouldn't support post-oil spill BP though?

Back in the 60's it was Castrol, then Shell Super 2000 in the 70's, then Mobil 1 through the 80's and 90's and I've come back to Shell (SOPUS) products up to the current time. Now, with 2 direct injected turbo vehicles in the house I am considering Castrol oil (Syntec) again. Hard to make a case for giving up PU just to replace it with Syntec though...

I have no GTX left, stash of 90 qts I have, has no Castrol, Maybe that's because GTX rarely goes on sale and all the oil I have bought has been because of sales, coupons or rebates.

I would have to say it was Valvoline. Used their Maxlife for the high mileage cars, Premium Blue for the Cummins (Cummins always referenced the use of that particular oil in their engines), and read the Motorcycle Study by Amsoil with the Valvoline conventional in the top 5 compared to many top end synthetics.

Now, primarily Mobil 1 and Rotella...with some Valvoline thrown in there for good measure lol

After joining BITOG, same old thing. Cheap oil was and is my favorite.

This is how I always selected oil pre-Bitog.
Not much has changed for me.
I knew enough to know that any oil meeting a recent API spec should be fine to use.
I did use a lot of M1, which was often much cheaper then than it is now and I did think I was doing my engines a favor in using a 5W-40 or 5W-50 over what seemed an overly thin 5W-30.
The biggest change that BITOG encouraged me to make was to forget about 3-4K OCIs.
I thought I was treating my engines well, but I was only wasting oil and oil filters.

Prior to discovering BITOG, I took my cars to the dealer or quick lube places and went with whatever was cheapest, changing every 3750-5000 miles. Then I got my 2008 Accord with the OLM and I stumbled upon the site by accident in an effort to learn more about oil life and oil life monitors.

Same with filters. Went with whatever the dealer or quick lube places had. I had no clue about OCODs, ADBVs, endcaps or anything like that.

BITOG has essentially changed my way of thinking when it comes to oil and filters.

Valvoline until 2003 when I started experimenting with Amsoil, and joined the site. Experimented with longer OCI and with driving style went with Amsoil. Looking back, could have easily gone 7500 with VWB.

Now with our cold winter temps it is Amsoil...

Castrol GTX before and funny I haven't used it since. No real reason, just other oils that was just as good for less $$.
