It might be the case but I wouldn't bet on it enough to purchase the shell. I live in a major city and typically purchase the cheapest gas from a decent place. This typically ends up being racetrack, sams or sunoco. I've never had a single problem with gas from any of these places.

I use Sunoco or Mobil here. Same raw gas (most gas comes from Sunoco's terminal here regardless of brand), but each has its own additives. Sunoco claims to use high levels of additives over the EPA.

I have owned a bunch of cars for 200K and additives matter. A lot. but they don't seem be noticeable until the car has at least 70k or so, since the computer makes it up.

There's a handful of Gulfs that I'll go to if the above is not around, which also claim to exceed the EPA level.

I also had a Sunoco mastercard which gave 4% but that program just ended. Too good of a deal.

I also worked at a company that had fleet vans and used Citgo gas from a commercial jobber and all the vans eventually got carboned up and had to be cleaned. I also won't buy gas to support Hugo Chavez.

There are no Texacos, Chevrons, or BPs for a long ways. An occasional Exxon or Shell a ways away, but 1 or 2.

Some others are Kwik Fill (a few), Valero (very few), and FastTrac (north of here) - all use EPA minimums and are the same price. Why bother.

At $4/gal, the days of freebies are going away!
