Fake Filter Damage?

when it time to change the oil in the wife's rx i go to the Toyota dealer down the road and pickup the oil and filter there. its $40 and i know i have everything i need and it meets warranty requirements.

Doesn't look to me that the filter is really "falling apart" looks like the end caps cracked like the filter housing was overtightened of misaligned during install, with the way the filter housing is designed I'm not sure a few cracks in the end cap would be that big of a deal, I think the cartridge would still reasonably keep it's shape, also clickbait title, he said the engine was fine then went on to conjecture "what could happen." This some killmer grade click bait coupled with "orange can of death" sort of fear mongering that to me shows this guy is just running out of content and looking for whatever to get clicks.

I agree its tough to tell, I bought my H/K OEM filters from amazon, but the seller was had a ton of OEM parts and good reviews. People get caught up on using OEM only but go buy from sketchy sellers on Amazon. Owner would've been better off buying a Supertech/Fram equivalent for the same price. Toyota dealer nearby has a everyday special on oil filters for 3.99.

It was interesting in that I heard him say only Toyota dealers can sell Toyota filters. How do all these other sellers get what
they are selling as OEM Toyota filters?

Sometimes the dealers bulk unload to resellers. The guy I bought a 6 pack from of H/K oil filters said he purchased in bulk from a dealership. But this was in early 2021 when stock piles were high. Now the prices are 70% more.

Could have cracked because the counterfeiters did a crappy job on the sealing material on the ends. He pointed out a visible difference in that material and the application between a known OEM and the filer in question. Also, I didn't know these filters has the printing on the side of a pleat.

I've opened a lot of OEM Toyota oil filters and don't recall seeing printing inside the pleats.

I'm not convinced that filter is counterfeit.

Cliff notes version: was ticking, changed filter stopped ticking, goes on for 12 minutes about hypothetical major problems and eventually hypothetically scraps car because of engine damage.

Just like one can buy counterfeit NGK and Denso spark plugs, it doesn't stop people from counterfeiting other parts and putting them in replica boxes selling them as name brand quality parts.

A metal can has plenty of surface area to print things. A cartridge filter.... especially of the Toyota/Denso endcap design.... not so much, but some information can be printed.
