Fact or Fiction about Pennzoil YB

Recently I was on a Taurus site/forum I frequent, and a post about oil came up. Someone asked which oil he should use given two choices. One was Kendall syn blend, and the other was Pennzoil YB.
What caught my interest was, a very respected member of the group said he would not use either, but more importantly he said he would not use YB because it has "issues". So I casually asked what issues he was referring to. I told him I had seen great UAO's and recommendations over here at BITOG.

He replied back: "It caramelizes and turns every thing in the engine brown. No big deal unless you open up the motor I guess".

Any thoughts, it just sounded strange to me.

Pennzoil YB is highly regarded here as one of if not best Dino oil around.
His claim just shows how little he really knows about motor oil.

Fiction-I had a Mazda Protege in the mid 90's that saw nothing but Pennzoil YB throughout its life and when i opened up the valve cover body it was spotless clean with no varnish. It did get oil changes every 3k miles though.

Thats what it sounded like to me. But I'm just now starting to really learn about oil myself. Plus this guys is considered one of the foremost guys with SHO's, as he's done a ton of work to them over the years. Anyway, it just kind of threw me for a loop.

Another 2-3 months on here, and you will know more about motor oil then any mechanic with in a 30 mile radious!

I used YB exclusively for many many years in all makes and model cars and vans. Upon joining BITOG I switched brands in some of my beaters to try and save some cash. Any time I pulled a VC anything I could see was very clean, with maybe a touch of varnish. All were well over 100K miles and were mechanically sound. Most were driven in mixed city highway conditions favoring city driving seeing 3000 mi OCI's.

He just might not like Pennzoil.

Try a search for "Pennzoil sludge" on here. This rumor has to be batted down about once every week or two. People misunderstand oil terminology and think it has large quantities of candlewax in it.

At one point, of course, Pennzoil was made solely in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania crude is a paraffinaic base oil. People hear that word and think paraffin wax. Pennzoil even has to address the issue in the FAQ on their website.

OK, I once dissolved some candle wax in warm Pennzoil. I then put it in the freezer. It did NOT crystalize out. Parafins are a large class of chemical compounds ranging from natural gas to ultra high molecular polyethylene. Dino fits between diesel and candle wax.

The guy didn't like either oil. Both good, IMHO.
What oil did he "promote"?

Ted, It's not on a SHO site, it was on the TCCA site which is for all Tauruses. But the guy is considered an expert more or less on SHO's.

I'm not looking to flame the guy, or even argue with him. He's given me good mechanical advice regarding my car in the past, but I just wanted to get to the bottom of what I thought was bad information.
Anytime anyone has questions about oil on the internet or in the real world, I routinely refer them to this site. The amount of info and help here is unbelievable.
