Hey everyone,

Just curious on something I've noticed on two different oils I've recently put through my 2017 F-150 5.0. My current oil of choice is 5w20 Quaker State Ultimate Durability and I've noticed its already going quite dark after roughly 2000km... This is quite the surprise because I was using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum previous to this and it was still looking quite "light" even after 6000km... I know QS has said in the past that this means an oil is doing its job and its just suspending contaminants, but this seems like a large difference in color to me, especially with 1/3 the mileage.

Thoughts?

It happens. I would just follow the factory recommended OCI and move on. Different brands change different colors at different times.

Even though color is not absolute indicator, I still believe the color is related to oil oxidation. I also find PUP and M1 EP is slower becomes dark compared with the rest of oil I ever try, like standard M1, local cheap brand, Pennzoil Platinum, etc.

What if the darker oil is darker because it was CLEANING THE ENGINE?!? It's interesting how many people think changing color fast is evil. Who knows. Color isn't an absolute indicator, as many have said already. If you're a typical human you're probably changing it, whatever color it is, sooner than you need to anyway. So just run it like it's the best oil and stop worrying. Then on your next change do what will help you sleep at night. Also, if you're not running a $15 filter your car will blow up anyway.

With as new as his vehicle is, the engine should already be clean. My fiancee has a 2017 F150 with the 5.0 and we use 5W-20 Motorcraft blend in it.

I've used 5W-20 Motorcraft blend in my 14 Mustang GT from the beginning and my oil stays clean looking the entire oil change.

I think that if 51% or greater of the people on this board answered along the lines of "I change my oil at 5,000 miles anyway using a quality oil so it doesn't really matter"...then I can't help but feel that significantly more than 51% would probably be right using that mindset in most applications. Although the causation differences would be interesting, If the oil gets dark in 1000 miles with one oil and 2500 miles with another it isn't high enough on my priority radar.
