Kestas,

I'm not sure if you meant to direct your post to me for bringing up the head gasket problems or Jett Rink for mentioning the fill quantity? Either way thanks for the information. :-) Mercedes revised the fill quantity for my diesel engine as well through a TSB.

I have a 1995 E320, which has the inline 6, with about 93,000 miles. My manual doesn't specify any particular weight of oil. Instead, it has a chart which matches ambient temperature with the different types of oil.

From the maintenance booklet, I can see that the first owner used 15w40 and 20w-50, depending on where he took it to get changed. My local indie Mercedes mechanic uses Pennzoil 15w40.

Gentlemen,

So y'all are saying it should run 1/2 quart below what the manual says is the FULL level? Where would that read on the dipstick?

When the engine is cold, I note that my oil level tends to be about midway between the min and max lines. If I check it hot a few minutes after shutdown, I note that the level is signifciantly higher, right up at the maximum mark. From your experience, where is yours at when it is 1/2 quart low?

My carport doesn't have any telltale oil stains.

As for the A/C on this car, if/when it goes out, I doubt I'll pay to get that redone. I'm sure it is pricey. We only have a couple of months of real summer weather here in the foothills to the mountains. And I don't consider it that hot, but I grew up in Texas, where summer is much more brutal than around here.

Autobahn Service Center in Bristol is an indie garage that works on Porsche, BMW, Volvo, and Mecedes. They work on alot of old BMW and Porsche cars around here. I've got my eye on a 1985 Porsche 944 that is just sitting in my neighbor's garage collecting dust for over a year due to a bad clutch. Whenever he gives up on it and gets ready to sell that one, I'm gonna take that one there to have it checked out, and make a lowball offer. Seems a shame for such a nice car like that not to be driven!

Mercedes specifies checking the oil hot, shortly (3 min?) after shutdown. I believe the level should be halfway between max and min. My engine burns hardly any oil, so I rarely check the level between oil changes.

If you have Mercedes-specific questions, you may want to consider surfing the following web site: MercedesShop

My procedure was simliar to Kestas. Wait 2-3 minutes and check the oil level. Keep it between halfway and the add mark. Wait until its close to the add mark to add oil, and then only add a half quart. If you start using synthetics, you may notice the oil level rise as time elapses after shutdown. This situation emphasizes waiting until the oil level is near the add mark before adding any, and then only half a quart.
