Ever hear this about Castrol GTX?

Once when reading, I will not say whom I heard this from or where I got this, I stop reading and do something else as the source to me is very crucial re. being accurate.

Odd comment since BP supplies the VW/Audi spec oils e.g; SLX Professional. The only thing they could be talking about is the reduced inherent lubricity of group III basestocks and EC friction modifiers affecting wearin - but this would be true of most any current 5w30.

Nice link Ben - See that Quaker State Conventional and Pennzoil Conventional are virtually ID and that Shell trade up moly for a lower Boron. Mobil uses lots of group III in the MC5K and it show with the lowest ( along with EXxon) volatility. The EXxon Superflo is SA Mobil Drive clean - the golden child of many a professional garage. The MC5K has a bit more Ca to get a higher TBN for the 5k insurance.

Yes, VW approved oils have all been synthetic for quite a number of years. I wonder if anyone knows when that became the case?

Arco : Their is NO group 3 in Mobil Clean 5000 its group 2 where did you get this info...or are you just guessing.

There have been rumors of MC5K containing group III for years, whether it's true or not is speculation AFAIK.

Ya. MC 7500 is marketed as a syn blend. If there's even a little bit of synthetic, they might as well market it as a blend.

All I used to run was GTX when I rebuilt an engine but that was a long time ago and things change. IMO however that is hogwash as others have said. GTX is a very good oil and I would still use it today on a rebuilt engine as the break in oil if I were to run a regular off the shelf dino.

Well, all I can say is that until someone produces a scanned page from this alleged manual, I'm going to hitch a ride on the bovine scatology bandwagon. If there is such a manual, then we can debate whether it's correct or not.

GTX is an average Gp II oil, no better and no worse than many others in it's price range. It won't be significantly better or worse than any other SM oil in the conditions being debated.

I'm not current on VWs (I was a tech in the late air-cooled and early water cooler era). The only thing that comes to mind is the possibility of the puck style cam followers being more vulnerable to wear (as with a flat tappet cam) ... assuming VW still uses them as they once did. That would be a vulnerability shared by all SM oils.

The foreign MSDS requireing full component disclosure, with the same us part numer show the base oil as severe hydrotreated /hydroisomerised paraffinic. Plus, just look at the Violatility performance - the only product performing to that level. AFA syn blend goes - I dont recall there being any current spec as to %, but a honest blender will use group iv/v as the synthetic component - OTW most all oils are synblends givin the add pack basestock.

Then, wouldn't they[VW] mention not using GTX, Pennzoil conventional, Valvoline conventional, Quaker State Conventional etc. or just to avoid conventional oil all together? Just asking! :)

Well, my first observation is that the Amsoil viscosity listed is 10W30, and your link compares 5W30 oils. My guess is that Pourpoint and Volatility would be affected by such a change.

I just find it odd that the PQIA results mirror the manufacturer's PDSs with only minor variations while Amsoil's really do not.
