Ever hear this about Castrol GTX?

Castrol's Marketing back in the early 90's was an absolute home run. They supplied oil exclusively for several Toyota and Honda dealers I worked in in that time period. The performance of the oil then was mediocre at best. Varnish buildup was so common in well maintained cars that we called it the Castrol Tan. The ironic thing was that one Toyota dealer I worked at had never used anything but Pennzoil bulk dino and the internals of our good customer's engines were spotless. If Pennzoil caused sludge in that time period we never saw it.
I have no doubt that the GTX product of today is far better than the GTX of the early to late 90's. I just never have had much confidence in the GTX product since. I think the GC oil will probably go down as one of the best though.

I have both a 1991 and a 2001 manual from a jetta.. they has never been any such mention.. considering VW uses castrol as there oem supplier i find this hard to believe... anyhow they wouldnt ever recommend Castrol GTX in anything they have.. it does not meet 502 let alone 507/504 specs.. so i guess the awnser is yes they dont but they also dont recommend any other conventional oil on the market eather.. and they do let u use synthetic on rebuilds from what i recall..

Why don't the mention the grades of the "other" mfg's products.

It would be a must more sincere marketing piece if they are comparing apple/apples.

I've heard a similar statement, but it's a joke.

9/10 VW engine rebuilders recommend Castrol.

Get it? They *rebuild* engines.

You can forget any grabass shop talk, it's all nonsense.

Castrol is the Official oil of VW, so there ya go.

Well, my first observation is that the Amsoil viscosity listed is 10W30, and your link compares 5W30 oils. My guess is that Pourpoint and Volatility would be affected by such a change.



So far no one has acknowledged your observation. Add to it the Amsoil graph is from 2008. Yet the response from BITOG is to attack Amsoil!! This place is funny. They say Amsoil followers are "blind".

Anyway as to the OP - it just proves that there are whole realm of folks in the automotive world who know ZERO about lubrication.

I can't see how GTX has a NOACK that low. 13.2 looks much more realistic. The Amsoil results are from 2008. Maybe that had something to do with it. There is no way GTX has a NOACK that low.

Not sure if it's because it's 10w30 or not, but that must be a contributory factor. I don't think the lab that did the testing is that wildly inaccurate. Maybe 1-2% indicated.

Why are you ignoring the 5W vs. 10W? Just curious.

I find this claim HIGHLY dubious. First, I've NEVER seem an OWNER'S manual ever utter the word REBUILD. Second, I would be more than a liitle shocked if they would actually call out a specific brand named product for [censored]. The fact that the manufacturer has a relationship with that oil company makes it even MORE unlikely......

Valvoline lists the NOACK numbers for their Maxlife synthetic. 10w30 is 7% and 5w30 is 9.5%. not a huge gap. redline's 5w30 and 10w30 are both at 6%
