In Athens County, OH (Where I went to college) they used coal chips when the salt ran out. Which was usually very quickly as it was and may still be the poorest county in the state, unfortunately.

I'll say. There are spell checkers for all browsers. Search the web.
On topic - if your ATF needs changing, change it. A partial swap if you like. If a fluid change results in tranny death, the tranny was probably dead already and just didn't know it - not the kind of situation I would want in a car.
