This is to you folks out there that are familiar with the effects of sulfonated ash. I am almost sold on the Esso XD-3 0w30 oil and will probably use that for my next oil change.

Is the relatively higher amount of sulfonated ash (1.49% http://www.imperialoil.ca/Canada-English/Files/Products_Lubes/IOCAENCVLESEsso_Xd-3_extra.pdf ) cause for concern considering that there seems to be a whole slew of other products that boast lower ash levels
( http://www.vtr.org/maintain/oil-overview.html )?

I would be more than happy to use this oil considering that the Esso distributor here in Ottawa quoted me at 3.78/L for this good PAO stuff

Here and here are good posts on the subject. From what I've gleaned from my readings, sulfated ash of 1.5% or lower is fine, especially if one's car isn't an oil burner.

I hope that someone with more direct knowledge of sulfated ash content and its effect on gas engines can chime in, as I am a fan of HDEO's, and am very interested in this particular oil.

Ajwan, where in Ottawa did you find this oil? The only place I seen it was at Walmart in Barhaven and it was the OW40. Not what I am interested in.

Redneck53,

I haven't bought any Esso XD-3 0w30 yet, but I did phone the local distributor. The lady was really nice and seemed to be very knowledgeble. I also asked her whether or not the oil is available to average joes like you and I and she she said that it's not a problem. They sell the stuff in bulk so I suppose you'll save a lot of cash if you buy it as such. At $3.78/L, it's very tempting!

I just wanted to clear up the whole ash issue considering my RSX Type-S (30,000km milage) drank up 750 mL of oil in 10,000 km. So you all think my car would be OK with Esso XD-3 0w30?

ajwan
