Hi. I live in Canada and have always avoided Esso Products. I was told that Mobil and Esso are the same oil. Could somebody with knowledge in Esso please explain this to me. Is Esso 10W30 oil any good compared to the big brands?(I currently use Castrol)

Exxon Mobil Corporation is the parent of Esso, Mobil and ExxonMobil companies around the world that sell fuels and lubricants under the Esso brand name.

I use Castrol myself, but many Canadians will tell you you are making a big mistake if you don't look into the XD-3.

Slippy345. The Esso oils you see at stores
like Walmart are not their best dino oils.
The Extra brand are Esso's plain econo oil.
Esso does produce a better dino oil with
better additives but is not available in
stores. I suggest checking with a Esso
Heating/Oil outlet in your area.
Now they do carry their XD-3 15w40 (dino)
and 0w40 XD-3 synthetic at Walmart. These
heavy duty oils are probably the best in
Canada.

Go to a a nearby Superstore and head down the automotive aisle and pick up some of the President's Choice 15w40 oil. I believe it was Cyprs that stated the President's Choice 15w40 is rebottled XD3, and it's only about 2 bucks a quart too.

Exxon/Mobil owns Esso but the oils they sell are not the same. That's not to say that Esso oils arn't any good though. Price vs quality is probably on par with the other big names. I know alot of farmers around here use Esso oils with no problems.

As stated earlier, their synthetic XD3 brand available in 0w30 and 0w40 is probably the best deal on oil going right now. You can get it for around $4/L at an Esso bulk station. Locate one near you here http://www.esso.ca/Canada-English/Products/Lubricants/PS_L_Distributors.asp

I use the 0w30 exclusively in my fleet of taxis and am very pleased with the cost vs performance ratio. I've increased my OCI's to 3-4 times what was possible with dino oil with plenty of safety margin left. Numerous UOA's showed equal or better performance than other big name oils like Mobil 1 and Amsoil.

That is true 55, I did say that, all credit goes to Yuk for his "crafty" method with Esso tech line to find out that XD3 15-40 is P.C. 15-40 dino.

My Esso agent told me months ago Ford Canada just made a large deal with Esso, Ford Canada (not U.S. Ford) will bottle XD3 for heavy duty use in Motorcraft bottles and possibly SL too. UFA (united farmers association) also bottle XD3 in their products.

Rule of thumb for Esso oils in chain store bottling: look for 3 stars on bottom bottle, look for green stamp at neck base, and the Esso bottle shape is very distinct, at SuperStore for instance, P.C. 15-40 (XD3) has the exact Esso bottle, three stars, the green stamp, the P.C. bottle also has the exact same colour lable as 0-40 XD3 syn and for good measure the P.C. bottle has a gold cap (same cap used on Esso Superflo bottles).

This oil is "undercover" in many bottles, chances are many Fords are now running Esso oil under Motorcraft Canada lable. I dont know for sure, but at a glance one day Unival oil sold at Home Hardware looked very Esso to me, will take better look next time, chances are Esso may have been in many motorists vehicles with out customers knowing it. John Deere oil is XD3 too.

From what I've seen, Esso is ExxonMobil's lesser quality. In our port of the world, Esso is all group I, mostly CF-4.

Why is Esso not marketing XD3 syn and dino world wide? XD3 syn is POA Group 1V, CI-4/SL and XD3 dino line is CI-4plus/SL. Esso XD3 is very comparable to Mobil as a Group 1V POA and infact heavier duty than Mobil here in Canada from what I understand.

Because 0W-xx is a hard sell to most ppl? I can barely buy the stuff retail here in Canada where its needed most, I can't even fathom trying to sell a 0W-xx oil to a Texan, especially on the premise of superior wear control.

XD-3 is nothing remarkable in the world of HDEO's. What is remarkable is its pricing point considering competitive products cost twice as much.

Here in the great white North Mobil's Delvac 1300
is no longer available, seems to have been replaced with XD-3. How does it compare to Delvac 1300 or Pennzoil Long Life?
Has anyone here used it?
IIRC XD-3 dino and 0W-40 PAO heve the same add pack in that case then it would make it a great oil. And it is only $10.48 /4L

Dominik, I am blending XD3 0-40 at 33% to 15-40 XD3 dino 66%, I have authorization for that from Esso tech and engineer, the add packs are very similar, this blend of 4-8 on 12 litre OCI keeps my oil pressure peaked for summer, my oil pressure was too low on 100% 0-40 in my 92 Cummins Dodge.

In interest, my XD3 0-40 at 100% use on winter 4000 kms OCI sheared 2 points, the 15-40 full dino in summer use sheared .7 in 5500 kms on my diesel, I have no fear of 0-30 use in my IMport, 0-30 XD3 syn shows in here on analysis that 0-30 can shear less and with lower clearances on car engines I dont see any trouble with 0-30 XD3, expecially according to Olympics results on his vibe in 20K+ OCI.

Mobil and Esso are mergered, on Esso/Mobil site XD3 posts all specs on XD3, Mobil doesn't, I smell a rat there, I believe there is purpose for Mobil not to post specs on Mobil in dierect fair comparison to XD3 syn, both are POA group 1V, it is the double price of Mobil in my belief that Mobil will not put its product specs directly against XD3, the truth would hurt in my opinon.

Pitzel, aren't Esso Bulk stations strategicly placed accross country and the Walmart, UFA and evern Superstores carry XD3 (in PC bottles) including Ford Canada in Motorcraft. I can get XD3 here home, Gull lake, Swift Current, Bow Island, Lethbridge, and at Walmarts in Swift and Med Hat. Also at UFA in Swift, Med Hat, etc. I really dont see a shortage of resourses for XD3. I see XD3 on some Esso gas service station shelves too.

When XD3 is spoken of in this forum it seems our American friends would buy this oil if it were on their shelves in the USA. I talked to an Esso tech on why the export of XD3 is not in full progress, he would not give me an answer to that.

Cyprs;

I was at Superstore last night and picked up a flat (12) of 10W30 President's Choice oil for $22. Arg ... thinking I was getting the XD-3 but not realizing it would be the basic Esso Extra (or whatever the lesser brand is of Esso).

Too bad since Castrol GTX can be had for ~$1.97/L at Costco.

So no reason to stop using CastrolGTX? In winter I use 5W30 and a block heater so I should be safe?

Sorry about that njc, it is the 15-40 dino P.C. oil that is XD3, the other oil is Protec line I believe. The P.C. 15-40 bottle does say Premium Heavy Duty Motor Oil which is much same as XD3 Esso bottle and the CI-4/Sl rating on it too. I generalized too much, I posted in mode that everyone was on same page as I and apologize for that njc.

Did you use the P.C. oil njc? If not, they should take it back.

Oh certainly no problem at all. I did my research here on the board and it was fairly clear the XD-3 = PC 15W40 ... I was just too asleep to retain that info once I got to the store!

I can easily take it back.

I'm also interested in getting the Ow30 XD-3 synthetic but after searching the BC dealers at imperialoil.ca, it routes me over to a Nanaimo # on Vancouver Island! This is strange since I thought I could find a bulk Esso dealer in Vancouver somewhere.
