edit: and he didn't "rehabilitate" himself - he assumed and lived under a false identity to avoid capture - almost certainly another crime, state and federal, as he was receiving SS benefits. Possibly even a stolen identity. More facts are needed.

+1 although he was recaptured and turned loose.. That blame falls on the state. If he was living under a false name and receiving state assistance.. well, that's breaking the law TODAY..

The details offered in this article are pretty scant, but my takeaway is as follows:
First of all, this sounds more like a walk-away from a minimum security prison farm than a real escape. Walk-aways among inmates allowed outside the fence are not that uncommon, while real escapes over the wire are quite rare in Ohio.
Second, to go from five years of supervision to twenty years flat time in one jump seems a little excessive.
Finally, from the article, it appears that the only aggravating factor that would have elevated this case from a misdemeanor to a felony was that the guy was driving at fifteen over. We cannot conclude that he was either drunk or racing.
To put this guy away after so many years would serve no purpose.
To those who claim that this will encourage others to get away, the half life of an inmate on the run is typically very short and they can be legally shot dead by anyone at any time while eluding capture.
