And if the dirt is smaller than the oil film through the bearing, it is harmless. So the thicker oil in an engine that has the bearing clearance to handle the thicker oil, would be safer. Thiner oil in modern engines probably needs a finer filtration (but still there is bypass). Insufficent lubrication or lack of oil volume could be caused by too thick an oil as (all else equal) higher pressure would equate to lower flow.quote:
