We picked up a used expo and I want to change the oil so I know its done right from the start. The truck was serviced at 20k miles and I see their is a mighty filter and dont know what kind of oil. The expedition has 20800 miles. I am just going to switch to MC oil and filter. And do the 5k oil changes.

Now the filter location seem pretty odd any tips on making this easy on me? Should I change it from the bottom or try loosen the filter from top? What size drain plug does ford use?

Looks like the manual calls for 7qts of 5w20. Now does this have to be a semi syn or could I use a full dino. I think on my shelf I have 7 qts of Exxon Superflo

does it have the filter on the left side of the block?

I believe its easiest from the bottom and believe it or not you can get a filter wrench in there, and there should be a little plastic trough for the oil to run down and out.

on the 4.6 and 5.4 i believe the pan plug is 15 or 16 mm

Semi-Syn or dino should be fine, modulars really seem to like the 5w20 and if its Motorcraft, even better :)

When I help my daughter change oil on her 03 Expedition, it seems to work best with two of us. I work from the bottom and once it is loose she threads it up from above.

The Exxon superflo will work fine if it's 5W-20 or 5W-30, with 5W-20 being preferable. After that, Motorcraft 5W-20 works well in these engines and it can be had fairly cheaply at Walmart for the 5 quart jug, $11+. Even the 1 quart bottles are only $2.68 by me in NJ. This is less than most other 5W-20 oils at Walmart.

plenty of miles on break in, why fool around at wally world? oil there is very expensive, especially it last only 5000 miles?
you want a headache every 5000 miles? ditch the liquid dirt oil and buy a NON PETROLIUM product! imagine in 5 years how many 55 gallon drums of waste oil you will create! BUY AMSOIL SAVE

The XL-series is Group III, you know, "liquid dirt oil", as you so nicely put it.

Dude - that is way out of line. Nowhere in any Amsoil promotion material does it mention calling other oil such names and in fact it is very unprofessional (and hence not cool per the rules). Dude, you can't even spell petroleum. That's ugly.

Pablo:

Remember quite some time ago when I mentioned that there are some that do Amsoil a severe disservice by representing the product in a way that is simply outlandish and making ludicrous claims about it's performance and capabilities?

Yeah, I think lazaro fits that profile.......

The major reason why I respond to [censored] that he posts is I've dealt with Pablo many times and he is a stand up guy.

Period.

And here is this spew with Pablos name on the bottom. Folks just passing by read one of the posts and see Pabs name on the bottom and think Pablo is like this guy and so they don't want to deal with Amsoil (and Pablo).

It would not bother me as much if he dropped his sig line. Then at least people would see with the other posts calling his posts [censored] that he is on his own.

Just like other one line posts from members stating "xxx is the only oil to use" without any further facts or data.

Over zealous cheerleaders are not needed. We have been here for a long time and one of the things that made it successful was facts were presented and if you want to try this or go this way, here are the people to help you. Not push [censored].

Amen!

Wow. So this guy thinks Amsoil is top quality oil and he speaks his piece and gets ripped for it? Maybe it was a little unprofessional but cmon.

Yep. His posts are un factual and over the top.

Remember that there are a LOT more folks who read this board for factual info (they never register) and then go to other boards posting "hey over at BITOG and they know their stuff" and quote that all oil at Wal-mart is liquid dirt oil that can only last 5k.

Lets pretend all of those 55 gallon drums of oil you are going to save. Lets use only 2. That is 440 quarts. In 5 years you would have had to use 7.3 quarts of oil per MONTH. And throw the oil away not recycle it.

Nope, here you will get called on it if your post is not facts.

The price you pay for trying to have accurate data (as much as can be) on a web site with members who care.

Take care, Bill

I have all those outlandish claims in the form of USED OIL SAMPLES.
nothing LUDICROUS about that!

Lazaro:

You RIP on "conventional" oil, yet Amsoil's ONLY API certified oil; the XL-series IS GROUP III OIL!!!!

Come ON man, get a grip! You cannot come on here, SLAM every other oil manufacturer's product, calling it tripe, make some random quote about Esters (which Amsoil may USE, but does NOT constitute the base-stock, which is PAO) from Smokey and then expect for everybody to swallow your outrageous post as factual and not fan-boy fanaticism.

If your posts didn't come across as being so heavily jaded, you'd likely get more positive responses.

Just let the board go where people like him want to take it.

Bill - keep it factual. I didn't actually count, but there are how many posts calling out Lazaro's bunk in the last two days? I think I even beat you to the mark.....

Frankly I'm proud of BITOG for not sitting by and putting up with his spew. Just as we would do with ANYBODY just making stuff up.
