Engine noise after oil filter replacement

Whenever a company makes good on a claim like this one they get more in goodwill than they paid to make good. We know Fram can make a good filter, but the good ones are NOT the OCOD.

Assuming the Champ PH48 filter has a bypass valve, even if somehow clogged or was blocked catastrophically, the bypass valve would hypothetically allow sufficient (unfiltered) oil to allow for sufficient engine lubrication. As far as the dealer blaming the filter, I can say, "My dog caused last week's heat wave." But simply saying that doesn't make it true.

Ahhh due respect, but wondering if you have read the entire thread? Champ/Rank has already admitted fault here, ie., the PH48 ecore was faulty.

As for the bypass, the spec'd oem ACDelco PF48 is a classic filter design having a separate metal dome end bypass and nitrile adbv and metal centertube. Otoh, the Champ PH48 Ecore uses a 'combo valve' design, a combined nitrile bypass and adbv at the thread end and an open nylon cage center tube. Since the OP hasn't reported being told exactly what issue caused the PH48 to fail so we don't know 'exactly' what the caused the problem. What is known is that the ecore combo valve bypass design used in the failed PH48 ecore is very different than spec'd the classic PF48 separate bypass and adbv design and metal center tube.

And, while GM specs/allows an ecore with combo design in several other applications, apparently for models using the ACDelco PF48 it does not. So, while the exact cause is unknown, it's a fair conclusion that something in the ecore design doesn't/didn't work in this application. And 'some' might argue that ecore design is not reliable design in total. Nitrile adbv are known not to be less reliable over time, combine it with the bypass and an open cage and perhaps there is a point to be made.

While we can't blame your dog for a heat wave, here we can definitely blame the PH48 for OP's engine issue resulting in engine replacement.

That filter thing. Lots of us in here have used so many different kinds of filters on our cars, we cant remember the brand names.

I have never had engine knocking or rattling over a filter, but it is a new day and age and things change. I have changed lots of oil on cars working at a gas station when gas stations did that kind of thing, and never did we have a rattle, engine loss over an oil filter, maybe that was because back then not everything came from China, Mexico, Indonesia, Pacific Rim, and so on. Awh, the days of good products are gonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I might have missed it, but was the CHAMP PH48 that the OP used indeed an Ecore design filter? I stay far away from Ecore filters for the various reasons you mentioned above.

Good question. Though the OP didn't provide that information, there are several online parts sources selling the Champ PH48 and provide pics of the base/thread end, clearly indicating it to be an ecore, auxillary tapping plate and all. So perhaps I should say, best available information indicates them to be an ecore design. Checking the links you can decide for yourself.

It does look like an Ecore design ... base plate looks just like the Ecore Super Techs did. If it was an Ecore, it's possible the media blew out and clogged up the engine's oiling passages.

Gm can not deny your claim for using another filter as long as it is the correct filter for the application.. You can use a Lawyer in this case and some of them will not charge you they charge the company.. My wife is a Lawyer here in NJ and she agrees.
I see this from time to time when people come into my engine shop... Don't listen to your dealer most don't al;ways tell the truth.
