If the rings didn't touch the cyl walls they would never seat.

I have no idea. My point was it contradicts all this stuff you constantly read about not using synthetics for "break in's".
 
Every SRT8 6.1 shipped since 2005 was filled with Mobil 1 0W-40 from the factory. Since mine has 110k miles now with no discernable oil consumption I must assume it broke in well...

Carefully parse GM's claim that Mobil 1 is put in 'Vette engines from the factory, and one sees the possibility Mobil 1 is part of a blend.
Race car teams might use a cup of Brand-X oil to meet a requirement for sponsorship, and the rest of the fill with oil of their choice.
GM may use 50% Mobil 1 and 50% special brew for break-in.
