Engine braking with a CVT?

My 2019 Rogue will engine brake. You can feel the drag when it starts to do it, and the RPMs raise in the tach. Works great!

I noticed my Corolla does likewise. Gave up on cruise on all but flat ground--going up the hill, it likes to overshoot, then going down the hill it wants to brake. I'm 98% sure that I can get better mpg if I just deal with the throttle myself.

Yeah that’s what the outback does too. Some people actually drive that way but I agree it does waste gas. I use a +- switch on the steering wheel to adjust the cruise speed up and down to save fuel and still use cruise.

The Malibu CVT has L mode and Sienna Hybrid eCVT has S mode…I imagine the hybrid kind of engine breaks itself of sorts when it is regenerating.

My 21 Honda HRV will engine brake going down hills.. I have only Drive and Sport mode....I have had the suv for over 2 years and yet have used the sport mode with the paddle shifters...

Subaru makes it easy. You just blip the left hand paddel for ever "lower gear" you want. Works great.

Majority of owners never touch that or know how to use it…,
