Emerald Ash Borer - Can I transport firewood?

I have several large and small ash trees. The power company dropped quite a few 2 years ago and they have just been laying down. They all show signs of that typical worming and all had their bark peeling off long before the power company dropped them down.

I would like to cut and give away the fire wood. The area that would be receiving the wood (approx 30 miles away) does not appear to have many ash, and the ones we found are healthy. I would hate to spread some kind of infestation to this area. Can dead wood still contain ash borer larva that could hatch?

The short answer is if it was infested with Emerald Ash Borer, transporting it can easily spread Emerald Ash Borer to new areas. If left to just the insect to spread, it would move short distances in a year. Human transport changes that.

Options here are to: Burn it, bury it, or chip it up to small dimensions.

Big problem here in Tennessee....theres even restrictions on transporting soil because of fire ants. (probably never enforced). and even though you may comply there are plenty of folks who won't. I suggest contacting your State Forestry Department website...for the real dirt.

I don't know about PA laws, but in NY you can transport up to 70 miles.
You can go further if you certify that it's been heated to a certain temperature to kill the boarers.

Just had two ash trees taken down.

The emerald ash borer (EAB), an invasive beetle species, has caused significant devastation to ash tree populations in the United States. It is estimated that EAB has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees across the country2. In areas with severe infestations, over 99% of ash trees may die. The beetle continues to spread, posing a threat to billions of ash trees in North America. In my neighborhood beetle has killed many trees!

Can I cut, and spray it with anything? I want to solve two problems in one. I want to provide free firewood for some folks in need for their primary heat. And I also want to get the eye sore off my property.

There should be quarantine zones in your area. Your state likely has a dedicated info site for you to review the current policy.

I would not transport it. Spraying it probably would not get them and you should not give away firewood to burn, that's soaked with insecticide.

Best option is to burn it on site where it is.

All counties in Pennsylvania are now positive for emerald ash borer. The federal government removed all quarantines in January of 2021.

25 years ago I sprayed some firewood with a pesticide. smelled like a Dow Chemical plant when I burned it the next year.

I believe the maximum distance you may transport untreated wood in NY is currently 50 miles.
