Hello everyone.

I would like to know what elementary statistics involves and how easy or hard the course load is in general. I have only completed my math up to The Functional Approach to College Alegbra. Also please explain if this course is easier or harder than college algebra. Thanks!

I guess it depends on how elementary. I would consider college algebra necessary for statistics, but again - maybe post the actual course description. Basic stuff is pretty easy - deeper stuff can be difficult to get your mind around, and if a problem in a timed exam is given with little context, very challenging.

It can vary dramatically...and the term elementary is relative.

For a business major or other non-hard science (medical related science for example), non-math or non-engineering major, it generally requires only algebra as a prerequisite. In that case it's not more difficult than algebra. It simply requires algebra to understand and use the equations that are presented.

On the other hand, if it's a class for engineers, it'd be called "probability and statistics" or "probability and random processes". Those classes are tough and will require integral calculus. The calculus is not what is difficult, it's just prerequisite.

Pablo, here is the description for elementary statistics course number 1342 at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, TX as follows:

Elementary Statistics (3-3-0).
Probability; population sampling;
collection, tabulation, and graphing of data;
frequency distributions; mean and standard
deviation; normal distribution; correlation and
regression, and tests for significance.
Prerequisite: MATH 0350 (Intermediate Algebra) or satisfactory score on TCC placement test (Accuplacer).

The stats class I took in college was geared to science majors, so it started out pretty fast and got deep quickly. I wouldn't say there were many very difficult to understand concepts, but you did have to work very hard to keep up. I remember studying a couple hours/night at least, but that did earn me a big fat 5 credit A! I had stats, calc, intermediate chemistry, and a couple other classes all at the same time. Gave me a great excuse to study with my GF every night at the library. She's been my wife for 17 years!

DigitalSniperX1,

I actually have no real clue what these courses have to do with Dental Hygiene but they are core requirements for the Dental Hygiene (Bachelor of Science)at Midwestern State Uinversity in Wichita Falls, TX.

Very little I expect...although you'll graduate a "rounded" individual.

Don't worry so much about it though. A little confidence goes a long way.

Thank You for the inspiration and the kind words in raising my self confidence level DigitalSniperX1. By the way, do your wife remembers any of the Old School professors still currently teaching at TCC? TCC still has Robert Davis, Glenda Nichols, Dr. Hap Lyda and a few others around teaching close to 40 years on South Campus.

It's been many years...about 1989 i think. So I doubt she remembers.

Do the work...if the results aren't what you want work harder and smarter.

A few successes and your confidence will grow.
