Electric bike from Harley Davidson

I don't foresee the electric models coming to a dealer near me...I've been to 5 different H-D dealers in my area and I haven't see any of the new Street series bikes yet

Harley is looking forward. The internal combustion engine isn't going to be around forever. [censored] 74 horses and 54 ft pounds of torque. Not bad.

They have some at Colonial Harley just south of Richmond, but they're for the beginners riding class. I sat on one and it feels small (disclaimer: everything is small for me).

Most people that wanted one have one and their sales reflect that. IMHO H-D corporate won't break out of the old tech mold for fear of alienating their base that expects a certain look, feel, sound. I'm not bashing H-D riders at all. They're paying for a style, an image. Not for a modern motorcycle. That's what they want and H-D is glad to keep shoving Fatbob Porkglide DynaPaintshakers into the showrooms. As long as the sales numbers are there.

How is expanding, diluting the brand? They will continue to offer the traditional bikes, while offering the newer designs. They've sold the VROD for over 10 years, and it hasn't hurt them. I see no reason why Harley can't cater to it's traditional buyers and new buyers at the same time.

That's the real thing.

Me too.

Just more to laugh at...

Harley acts like they want to "break out of the mold"... but their owners keep dragging them back to the 1960's.

I have an idiot cousin who wore his HD shirt, his HD tie, and his HD sunglasses to his mother's funeral. He looks like some sort of freaky red alien from the planet Mars, from riding half-naked all of the time.

Oh well. At least the idiot owners can't put straight pipes on this one.

Electric motorcycles. Meh, not for me. I'm not a loud pipes guy but I do like some exhaust note. I like the sound of an inline four winding past 12,000 rpm. I like the sound of my Ducati twin winding past 9000. Not because it's obnoxious, because it sounds cool as he1l.

Progress. There are other electric bikes. It's going to be interesting to see where HD (and other makers) go with this. It was bound to happen. HD shook up their engineering program and some cool stuff is coming of it. Water cooled engines (other than the VROD), now an electric bike.

A friend owns a "Zero" motorcycle. It's the newer version with the big motor and big battery.

I've got to admit that it's an absolute blast. It's "roll on" performance exactly matches my Suzuki SV1000s. Sure, the SV is not a superbike, but it ain't slow either.

The Zero really has a lot going for it. The instant power is absolutely intoxicating at legal speeds. The bike simply begs you to twist the throttle.

Range issues are the limiting factor. Motorcycles are not all that aerodynamic, and have limited space for batteries. This leads to fast consumption of the available power. I think the above Zero has a practical range of 70 miles. The good news is that it has a built in charger that uses a standard outlet. So charging at work is no problem.

From what I have read, if I were interested in an electric bike, it would be a Zero.

It would be nice for a change If there could be some talk about the engineering and emerging tech and stuff without "blahblah oil leaks, blahblah piece of junk, blahblah antique tech, blahblah loud pipes.....just saying.
