Electrek.co: Elon Musk announces two new Tesla paint colors enabled by new ‘world’s most advanced paint shop'

Pretty simple. The last two MBs that I've owned had terrible paint. The 2014 was a little better that my current 2018. It's not thin and rusting like the Tesla paint jobs, just fragile (chips easily) and on close examination plenty of orange peel.
Wken I bought my last Caddy, the dealership next door was MB. When I pointed out the paint flaws on the new Caddy, the salesman took me next door to the MB dealer. He was right, the MB paint was worse then too.

It could be that I'm just too picky about such things, but I WAS considering just a couple days ago to have a paint correction done on the MB. Unfortunately it would likely run over $500.00, so I couldn't justify that.
Paint on my M5 was fantastic, and all the bimmers we've been looking at recently had great paint too. I didn't look too closely when we were test driving the GLE's because we weren't as drawn to the vehicle as we have been with the X5, so I can't comment on your Mercedes experience unfortunately.

My e-tron also had perfect paint, so it appears to be something VAG does well as well.

Out of curiosuty, do they charge different color or option owner different insurance cost due to the paint, electronics, etc? or do they just use the model name and or trim to decide that?

When I was shopping X5 insurance, the rate was the same as the Jeep, they didn't even ask the colour, even though BMW does charge more for different colours. What they did ask is if it had the automatic emergency braking the same as the Jeep, because keeping the rate the same was contingent on that.

My Volvos all had great paint, especially the earlier 2000s. Toyota and Honda …ok. The 2018 f150 paint feels gritty. The Carmax respray on my Lexus actually looks deeper than the factory!

In Dec 2018, black was the standard color; white was $1,000 or $1,500 more; I forget. Red Metallic was $3,000 which was the most.
We also got 19" alloy wheels (maybe $1,500) and EAP ($5,000).
Costco Ameriprise did not ask me about any options. Of course, they have the vin...

Seems Elon has learned from Porsche to start charging extra for everything. Radio $1000, radio delete $1000. Black paint $1000, non black paint $1000.
Actually, there are very few options, you can Configure Model 3 yourself.
Drivetrain and Range, Paint, Wheels, AP.

But he sure knows how to raise the price, like $5,000 in the past couple months.
Just like the dealerships, only cutting out the middleman.

So the big question is, will these Tesla cars with the fancy paint have to go back to Tesla for a repaint after a accident?

When body shops started getting Mazda cars in with the Soul Red Crystal, they had to refer to Mazda for the procedure. The paint has to be ordered and the job done by someone who is trained on the procedure. The Mazda color has three coats, the base with aluminium flakes, a translucent red and the clear. Obviously with more coats the Tesla will be way more difficult.

Video shows the Mazda procedure.

Personally, I think it is a gimmick. These cars are expensive enough for what they are. To heck with uber expensive paint colors.
I only paid more for white paint because I was not gonna do black. Too much work keeping it clean.
And the stock "Aero Wheels" looked horrid.

Now, the stock stereo is the best I have ever heard, puts the Lexus Mark Levinson to shame.
The sound is the 2nd thing everyone mentions when they are in the car.

Same procedure I did painting model cars candy apple red in the 70s. :)

If his royal mouthiness wanted to make Tesla better, how about he drop the attitude, and assemble a vehicle that WILL have parts availability in more than 5 years. The whole company is a joke. Plus most Tesla (not all) owners are snotty, arrogant and think they are above everyone. If Tesla wanted to "revolutionize" paint production either the Ford truck plant or BMW plant in Spartanburg would be a good place to start. Shoot the BMW plant in Spartanburg can assemble vehicles for different regions as the line is moving along without retooling. I will say when I sold cars for VW the paint and trim matching was excellent.

I think Buick beat them to it.

About the snotty arrogant owners, they were on BMW before, then Prius, then Tesla. One day they will move on to some exotic stuff from Antarctica and Tesla would be driven by the poor people commuting from 3 hours away on autopilot.

Speaking of which, he just priced his prospective buyers out of the California $2000.00 rebate. I don't think the Model 3 or the Y now qualify.

Oh how sad, that'll buy you 333 gallon of gas. They now have to settle for black paint instead of white or other fancy color of their choice.

Tesla demand is off the charts. They have no chance of meeting that demand this year or next.
But yeah, CA is the biggest car market in the US, by far. Maybe Musk shoulda kept the Standard Range (now $47K) under the limit.
Of course, the wait time for that car is 3 to 6 months if you live close to the Fremont plant, further out depending on your zip code.

Maybe take that money, invest in TSLA and buy a Tesla in 1 year. Probably save $10K to $20K, at least?

It's going to be really interesting comparing the American, Chinese and German cars.
