Egg panic in my area.

I wonder how much of the impact of the H1N1 outbreak has been caused by spread through operations with a million plus layers on each site? I wonder whether a more distributed production model would be more resilient, albeit more costly?
Ohio is one of the largest egg producing states and has suffered considerably recently from flu outbreaks, resulting in the killing of millions of layers.
Eggs here are in the four dollar a dozen range, with retailer specials here and there.
Fresh chicken prices remain pretty moderate and have not spiked like those of eggs.
I wonder why this might be?

A lot of cities allow people to have up to 6 hens but no rooster...you've got to eat a lot of eggs with 6 hens in their prime...but people could help themselves if they wanted to.

Just sit back and let them pay $50 for a 60 count of eggs at Walmart if they want to and eat something else. I mean, this is ridiculous.

Somehow the plot of Interstellar seems to fit though. The Earth just dies from ecocide while everyone figures "Just eat something else." until we're down to corn and nothing else. No birds in the sky, no chicken, no turkey, no goose, no eggs. I guess that's first.

I didn't have "Earth's ecosystem breaks down and people fight over the last chicken eggs." on my 2025 Bingo card.

Watch it spread to cows, pigs, humans. Not letting USDA inspectors onto the farms fixed everything, didn't it?

People go crazy. they are $7.50 here in SE PA and stock is low. If they raised the price to $12 there would ve even MORE demand. Tou would have thought people would have learned their lesso0ns.

I've gotten into the habit of a 2 egg omelet in the morning and I'm not sure I'll change course, not until it's like $2 per egg. It's like the price of gas, until I'm willing to change my habits, I'll keep buying & using and just eat the cost (no pun intended).

We did however buy a couple extra pallets of toilet paper. Just in case. 'cuz that made a ton of sense back in the day...

Good quality pasture raised dozen eggs is about $6.50 around here, or at least last time I bought it. I'm sure it's going to be more now because of this panicking.
