South Florida, a senior enclave, sees more people ‘unretiring’ due to living costs

This is where my father in law and me don't see eye to eye. He thinks people that don't need it, shouldn't take their social security benefits. This way the government can give more to those that need it more.
You should tell him he can still take his benefits and use his savings accounts to write checks to worthy organizations.
It will be more effective for him to decide where he donates $25,000 or more each year🙃 why does he want his government to forcibly take his savings and do it?

Social Security is YOUR government retirement savings account which you funded with your salary

Well, he actually needs his ss check. But we know people in their 70s making $500k a year that are taking they ss and giving half back. He thinks they should give it all back. Then he wondered if Trump took SS while he was president.

No. He didn't even take the salary.

But what do you mean "give it back"? Donate or give back to SSA?

Actually as silly as it sounds, take it and donate it is more efficient. I like the voluntary idea.

Forcing via law/jail/gun point people to not take something they paid into for 50 years is a pess poor idea.
He doesn't want people to be forced. They should do it out of the goodness of their own heart. He's a very kind man. Always wants to see the good in everyone.

Yeah, all good, there are always people who think people who work hard, amass wealth should be forced to give it away to other people who do not. Goes back to the days of Kings and Queens. Someone always wants to rule over others. Its a power trip.

I just read your post he is a very kind man and entitled to his thoughts.
This is who he wants rich people to leave their hard earned retirement money with? https://usdebtclock.org/

Certainly doesnt look like a wise choice to me,

BTW- maybe you should tell him that 99% of the USA population makes less than $500,000 a year and 90% of the population makes less than $150,000 a year. SO if the way he feels only rich people should help, maybe he needs to rethink that everyone should give back to those who do not work as hard.

and what about your family? your children, grandchildren? You work hard all your life to leave that money in strangers hands to give to someone else instead of your family?
BTW- just discussing here in a friendly way!
I don't disagree with you. His daughter (my wife) oscillates between thinking like her father and "I've worked hard for 40 years, why should I have to pay higher taxes to support people that want to sit home and not work?"

No worries, amigo. My late mother and my wife's parents and are extremely similar so I get it. There was never a calm serious discussion in my house involving my mother. Every discussion was either banal or dramatic. Same with the in-laws.
