a bit off topic, but I figure bitogers would know. I'd like to buy an electric dirt bike for my 13yr old, something on par with a honda CR80 (or the yamaha YZ80 I had when I was his age). I know nothing of the E-bike market. looking for recommendations, places to buy from, etc. I know I could do my own research but the folks here are very knowledgeable so why not ask...

I will assume for a minute you can afford things.
I would highly consider an E-Bike first. An E-mountain bike.
He'd have more places to ride and and more fun if he is like me. The places one can ride a E-dirt bike where I live share the trails with side by sides. No way.
You could both get E-mountain bikes and have some good memories.

I can afford it. but how would you classify an E-mountain bike vs. a E-dirt bike? I mean, I know what a mountain bike is, and I know what a dirt bike is... a mountain bike is much lighter and has skinny wheels and is human-powered. I'd assume any E-bike will be as light as possible... and if it had suspension and knobby tires then it would qualify as a "dirt bike"??? or a "mountain bike"?? obviously I don't know the market or available products at all... but brands like "segway" or "Razor" don't instill much confidence...

An electric mountain bike has pedals, cranks and gears like a normal mtb along with the battery and motor. an e-dirt bike has foot pegs like a motorcycle. There is a category of cheater bike that is an e dirt bike with a cheap set of pedals and cranks and one speed that is intended to ride on bicycle trails that allow ebikes while acutally being a motorcycle. You can spend as much or little as you want on an e - dirtbike. One is a bicycle, one is a motorcycle, sounds like you want a motorcycle.

interesting... so I guess I'm not concerned about being "allowed to ride on bike trails" since that's not an issue here... although the ability to pedal home if the battery dies is not a bad idea. Ultimately I'd like the thing to have some serious power... like a an 80cc 2 stroke, so he could have some fun with it. I'll admit I've never ridden a "pedal powered e-mountain bike" but it doesn't sound like something that would get up a scoot down the trails like a CR80 would.

You want an e-dirtbike. I don't know of any small emtbs meant for kids. There are small e-dirtbikes meant for kids racing MX so they're out there.
Some nice options here but cost as much as a car. Anything reasonably priced but has the Razor name is a hard pass for me as well - junk.

The Sur-Ron is fairly highly thought of. Although I've never ridden one. Also Segway makes an E-motorcycle that is also highly rated.
Just keep in mind that they do not have the level of suspension quality the Japanese motorcycles are known for. And while they make great play bikes, they do not have more than 25 miles range, regardless of claims. For many folks, 25 miles of range is enough. For me, it's nowhere near good enough. Heck, simply riding over and back from a buddies house 10 miles away is pushing it. I've been known to do 175 miles in the woods. so such short range really makes this kind of bike impractical for my uses.

Of course, Honda makes an 80-85cc equivalent 4 stroke dirt bike that is about 150cc. It's pretty epic. I've ridden them, they don't straighten your arms like the 80-85cc two strokes, but they are every bit as fast and sometimes faster, due to a wide torque curve and adequate HP. The little Honda also has world class suspension, unlike the electric bikes. You'll notice the Segway above uses only the lower triple clamp to mount the forks. This "ain't" good for real world off road use.

Rombo e bikes makes several different type. The duel motor with a motor in each wheel hub and 2 batteries looks promising. These are rated to take an adult into woods for hunting and drag a deer out behind it.
