Hi guys, I picked up a new(er) integra with only 80km (50K) miles. Im switching it to synthetic from whatever mystery juice is in there, just because of the daily stop and go and occasional track time it sees. Should I shorten up my oil change interval after Ive switched? Or would it be better to run a flush? Or should I just say screw it and change it as usual and not look back? I've search, and the search engine keeps showing me the same results?? Thanks for any input. Ryan

Your going to get different answers but if it were me i give it a good auto rx treatment since you dont know how the other owner treated it. Then use what ever you want.

Thanks for the reply, Im guessing you mean a flush? I usually shop at partsource, and they probably have something. Thanks again. Ryan

I'm not a fan of doing flushes, but from what I have read, Auto RX is not the typical hocus pocus micacle flush like many claim to be. I suspect it actually works.

It is available at www.auto-rx.com and I would suggest using it if you choose to flush.

If you don't have any reason other than the unknown to do a flush, just pick a good synthetic and go with it. Maybe a quick OCI just to make yourself feel better. Maxlife may be a good options as the high mileage oils claim to have more detergents and would aid in cleaning things out.

Chk out Mobil 1's web site - they claim they're new HM oils are specifically designed for engines w/ tough histories. And they say to run the first OCI for just 3k in an engine w/ improper previous maint. So it sounds like you could use their HM oils as a flugh of sorts - very high detergent stuff apparently.

right on, thanks guys. Yeah I have a hard time throwing things into my crankcase that arent oil! The seafoam thing scares me a bit, and I enjoyed the post of the famous smoke show it produces only being seafoam burning off! I'll look to see if the place I shop has auto-RX and if not, I'll just change the oil again in 2 months or so. Thanks again.

You won't find AutoRx in any shop... you have to go to the website mentioned above.

I would personally just change the oil with whatever synthetic you're planning on using and running a short 2-3K OCI. Then I would change it at 5K OCIs from there on. This is similar to the other suggestions above...

I've never heard anyone on this board say they've had AutoRx remove any varnish stains. To me, that's the No.1 culprit of a used car that's had less than satisfactory maintenance.

MaxLife on the other hand has removed some mild varnish stains from a used car that I bought. I know I'll catch some flack for this, but in the interest of the OP, I think AutoRx is a waste of money when for the same price, a person could fill their crankcase up with a high quality synthetic oil like Mobil 1 and get 5 times more cleaning work than from AutoRx.

or possibly use MOBIL CLEAN 7500 at .95 cents a quart at ADVANCE AUTO PARTS ( if still in stock at nearby store(s) ) and do 2 or 3 shorter oil changes and lengthen each oil change for a flush ( example : 1st. o.c.i. > 1,500 -2,000 mis. , 2nd > 2,500 mis. or so , 3rd > 3,500 , then go to 4>5,000 mile intervals w/ what pleases you as an oil ) . Sure I'll get some slack on this suggestion .

GOOD LUCK

Haha, thats funny. I think either way will do what Im wanting it to do. Ive got 4.4 litres of syntec sitting here waiting to go in. Id normally run mobil1 but I always find the honda engines seem a bit noisier on the stuff. I know its great, but the castrol is usually cheaper as well so I go with it. I think I'll shorten up the OCI for a couple changes. I may boot down to partsource on my lunch break to see if theyve got modil clean...just because Id rather be looking at oil than sitting at my desk! Thanks again guys. Ryan

Varnish is just a cosmetic stain that some oils leave behind, even if run relatively short intervals. AutoRx's job is to deal with issues more serious than removing stains.

man just switch the oil. people here make is sound so ____ difficult or "hey you have to do this in order to do that" you can switch oils at will. its just best not to switch brands too often bc they all have somewhat different compounds and additives..
