Durablend; cheap and meets high standards

I just picked up 5qts of Durablend 10-40 from another Advance. I did however notice the firt bottle (older) didn't have ACEA A3 on it. But after it all the other did have it on there.
 
yeah... kinda odd no other dino 10-40 claims to but then Valvoline puts A3 on their 10-40 and 20-50 AC product info sheet... but it aint on the bottle. something is screwed up.
 
I have used Durablend and reg. Valvoline in the past, both were great. It seems as if they are not high on the favorites list on this site. Just wondered why?
 
Reading this bottle of DB. SM,CF, A3. No GL-4 on the bottle. so the dino 10-40 said GL-4 but no A3, now the DB says A3 and no Gl-4. Do they clash with each other or somin?

If ANY motor oil has GL-4 on the label something is seriously wrong.

Thanks for that information. I did not know this before. I will be certain to avoid this A3 qualified oil at all costs due to the high HT/HS requirements. I though this requirement died in the late 1990's when the Europeans learned a little more about oils.
 
SM and A3 together is quite a feat. SM limits additive levels, A3 needs a healthy add and basestock combo.

Worse than that. In a 5w20 grade you need a HT/HS near 2.6 to qualify on the fuel mileage qual. You are toast trying to do that at 3.5. European spec designed in the stonehenge age.

I have been reading a book on the history of European man, it is very interesting. Stone Hinge was a marvelous technological achievement considering the technology of the time.

In this case some Euro cars still manufacture engines that require an A# oil "Or damage may occur". This could be from limited sump capacity or manufacturing choices in regards to clearances and variances within them.
In other words for those cars A3 is good, for engines designed to run at reduced friction A1 and A5 oils are genuinely a good European spec.
Most of us have cars that require ILSAC, and or JASO standards though but it is interesting to see how the specs cross label.
 
Aren't there more than one ACEA spec? I'm pretty sure some oils list dated spec's from 98 rather than 04. I've seen some of Valvoline's oils list dated specs for a time, but I haven't checked so I don't know.
 
but yet all the $6+/qt syns brag they meet the A3, B3/B4 standards. I swear.... the more we research oil, the more stumped we are. I've only seen A3 on 40wt oils. thinner oils have the A1.

I've set a budget of $3/qt. so for me i'm trying to get the best 10-40 for under $3/qt. Durablend seem to be the best candidate. other than it there were regular dino oils like gtx ad ac valv and the SL yellow bottle of penz and such. DB just seems like the best bang for the buck in my situation.

Reason I set $3/qt for my budget is my car takes 5qts. so I can get oil for $15 and a wix filter for $5. high quality oil change for $20 or less. can't go wrong with that.
