Dumping PP; can i reuse the filter for diff. oil?

I think he’s on to something. Why not change the oil, oil filter, the fuel filter, flush the fuel tank, change the air filter, change the transmission filter and flush the transmission, flush the cooling system, have the front-end aligned replace the tires and air them up to 44Psi! Did I miss anything?

I don't know what to do now.

I could:

1. Replace just the oil and re-use the filter (after emptying it)

2. Replace the filter and keep the PP

3. Replace the oil and filter

4. Wait for 3k and then replace oil + filter (I've been on this OCI for a month and already am up to like 1300 miles so almost half way there already)

#@$%!, life just continues to be complicated. What's the point. Why the #@$%! did my gas mileage have to go down anyway.

Leave it alone and make sure you really are seeing a loss in MPG over a few tanks. If you just got one tankful at a low MPG, perhaps that gas pump was reading incorrectly, and you really didn't get MPG that low at all.

I like to gauge my mpg by watching the odometer miles as the gas gauage hits 1/2 full. I figure the gauage is very accurate at the 1/2 mark and I just look at the miles. If I am +/- 200 in my RSx or +/- 160 in the CRV, I know I am on-target for ~normal~ miles. It's pretty accurate and simple.

If you really want to determine if it's the filter, then you should change only the filter, leave the PP (and don't forget to check your oil level before and after doing so).

If you change the oil AND the filter, then you cannot draw any real conclusions should you actually see your mileage improve to its previous range.

Regardless of what you decide to do, I agree with the others that you should at least run a couple of tanks through it.

FWIW, with my Miatas, I only got more than 20 MPG average for a tank on one occasion and that was when I went on a long road trip and made a concerted effort to keep my RPM's as low as possible and drive like my grandma.

Instead of 20 MPG, I got 33 MPG. I had been on long trips over similar roads before but only got my usual 20 MPG. The only difference that trip was that I intentionally changed my driving style to see how much difference it would make.

...and I also had a 275 lb passenger in my car for half the 6 hour trip when I got 33 MPG.

Pay close attention to your driving. That could very well be the real source of the change.

Something is very fishy here. I don't believe that PP or the oil filter are causing a sudden drop in fuel economy. Although I haven't tried the S2000 filter on our '03 V6 Accord I have used at least half a dozen different brands on it and I check fuel economy at every fill up. Oil filters have never made a noticeable difference in economy, nor does synthetic vs. conventional oils.

Auto-Union - that's funny

My gauge in my car is weird. It's really slow from full to half (shows i'm getting over 35mpg) then as it hits the half mark it starts to plummet quickly, suggesting i'm getting 15-20 mpg. At fill up though, I keep track of miles traveled and amount it took to fill up, and usually end up having 27-28mpg (50/50 city/highway) strange eh?

Well I hate to leave something like this in my car but I have no choice based on the comments here and my own $ investment so far. I am just going to leave it in there and hope it doesn't screw up the synergy I built up. I get the feeling because of the fact I reported it felt heavier that this heaviness might be infact what is causing the pumping loss and thus the low mileage. I also notice that when I agoing fast on the freeway, the rpms sit at 2500-3000 rpm but when using MC, I swear it was closer to 2000-2200 but who knows. I think it's pumping loss. I'm going to leave it alone. I know that's what my sister would tell me as other have above. I got the M1 and stock A02 filter ready. Having said that, I am tempted to drain the oil and put in M1 and leave the filter in there and go that route rather then waste what is a great filter prematurely..I want to try that to see if it's the oil because truthfully, I am just so so curious..it's worse then a cat, my curiosity right now. Then if it FE still is low, I can put in the stock filter and leave the M1 in and see if the FE is low and if that doesn't fix it, I can go back to MC and leave the stock filter in.

I'll agree! This site has been getting rediculous far as discussing oil topics anymore. Thus being the case,I'll stand back and watch the #@$%! fly!

Agreed. With his history of silly posting it's amazing that this one has 2 pages of "advice".

The oil and the filter has absolutely NOTHING to do with your problem.
You will need another forum in order to address the true issues you are facing.
My suggestion would be WebMD dot com.

If you are in fact seeing higher rpms than you did before, perhaps your torque convertor is no longer locking up, causing the poor gas mileage due to higher rpm on the highway now. This is not something you can blame on the motor oil, it's just a coincidence that it happened around the same time.
