Dump Truck Build: 2000 Mack DM690S

Hauled 7 loads in for the county yesterday and have a lot more to go. We have a new Presiding Commissioner and she is really trying to get our county roads back into shape. They plan to keep me busy just hauling rock for them. Tailgating is probably one of my favorite jobs. I’ll spread it roughly 2” thick and they’ll dress it up with a grader.

I enjoy tailgating also. Oh wait I think your version is different 🤣

Glad you are getting good use out of your project.

Awesome pictures and you do great work from what I am witnessing 🍻🇺🇸👍👍

Finished the week off with nearly 600 tons put on this road. Now I’ll be waiting for it to dry out so the county can get to grading and tell me where I’m headed next. Gonna wash the truck tomorrow and probably do another grease job. I’ll bet it’s got a ton or more of mud caked on everything from running miles and miles of muddy dirt roads.

Side note, the haul truck in the photo blew a tire at the quarry, they need two because the inner dual is bald too. $8000/each for new ones IF they can even find them. It seems the off road tire industry is plagued by supply chain issues right now.

Not so happy update to share, while business is exploding right now the output shaft bearing in the transmission let go today. I have parts ordered to fix it and hopefully the bearing is all that failed or was damaged. If the bearing doesn’t fix it we’re headed to the gear shop next week for a full transmission overhaul. With parts, labor, R&R, and a tow I imagine this will be approaching $8000 if it comes to an overhaul. Fingers are crossed that the damage is minor.

@Creekside this is the downfall to older equipment. The good news is hopefully it is paid off and you don't have a payment each month for roughly half that amount... That said, lost business is lost business. Good luck man, hoping for a speedy fix!

So far it’s worse than I had planned for. Pulling the driveshaft and yoke was uneventful but when I pulled the bearing and housing the shaft also pulled back with it and feels like it dropped out of the front bearing that pilots it. According to my shop manual the front bearing has likely failed also and it probably missing a snap ring. Got the load off and Bobcatted out of the way and went ahead and pulled the entire driveline to prepare for a wrecker to come get it. Tomorrow I’ll pull my speaker box and my OEM floor mat out and start pulling the floor pans(they bolt in on these trucks, allows super easy access to bell housing bolts) to save some labor at the gear shop. I also don’t want my speaker box and mat to be destroyed.

The shop is running behind schedule but the transmission came out today. They said they’ll have it open tomorrow or Monday to see that all it needs. Due to the parts and labor cost to reman one of these I’m looking at a reman transmission from an outside source that also carries a better warranty. Thought some of you would like to see these lifts for heavy trucks. They’re a true game changer.

we have column lifts at my shop too they are great. We have 6. Hope you have some better news once they tear it down.

Picked her up from the shop today. We did a reman transmission, rebuilt and balanced the driveline(slip yoke splines we’re starting to wear), new shift tower, and a bunch of little stuff. I also had 4 new drive tires installed today on the way home. This repair with the tires was around $14,000 all together. That does not include lost revenue though.

It is already booked for tomorrow and all next week so I think we’ll get over it soon. I’m looking at it as a blessing, it gave me time to take care of some other things and it could have been worse.
