Dump Truck Build: 2000 Mack DM690S

I put the Mack in a couple of our local Christmas parades today. It was a blast and a lot of the little kids absolutely loved it. I had hoped to get the cab buffed but my work schedule didn’t allow any downtime this week.
Need your contact info on there for marketing. As if you aren’t already busy! Isn’t it a DOT requirement as well for commercial operations?

I had hoped to get the lettering done before the parade but it didn’t work out. It is still in the works though. Yes the company name should be on to satisfy DOT requirements however I operate locally in a VERY rural area and there’s few DOT enforcement officers around here.

Few action shots of the Mack from last week. I was tailgating a load of lateral in a gate entrance that was getting soft at our farm. 2022 has started slow for it but that is normal. I’m hoping things take off soon even with the state of the current economy. I raised prices at the first of the year and will likely be forced to again. Diesel hit $4 here this weekend and theres no slowdown in sight.

Just be happy you don’t have to buy DEF on top of diesel. I’d take that rig any day over a new one. Probably gets better MPG’s also.

Just my $0.02

Finally found time to do my hub pilot conversion on the steer axle. This gets me on “regular” semi truck wheels instead of Dayton’s which can be a bear to get running true with no vibrations. The hubs came from ConMet, they are a fantastic company that can identify a hub with only your o bearing and seal numbers. They also were able to tell me which brake drum I needed. It got new brake shoes, new drums, new Timken bearings, new seals and filled with Schaeffer 75-140.

Also, I have purchased an ex Modot trailer that I will be fixing up once it’s home. I will start a separate thread for it since this one has gone over so well. It will be sand blasted and painted to match the dump bed.

Are you planning on reworking the front bumper where the pump came out? To flatten it out?
I keep going over different designs but for the moment no. There are large tow points located in the bumper extensions that I will likely lose if I put it back like a normal one. If I come across something I like that maintains good towing connections then I’ll modify it.

Had an interesting job yesterday, picked up 10 tons of lime and transferred it into bull bags to be shipped to another division in Oregon for some experiments. Got two Christmas parades coming up Saturday which is great because after transferring the lime this thing is dying for a bath.

I like the front bumper the way it is. You can tell everybody it used to be a concrete truck. :)

Trucked in 190 tons of base rock today for a road and drainage rebuild project that is being done. This was tailgated and will be cleaned up with a motor grader then a smooth roller.

Did two local Christmas parades today, the Mack was a hit as usual and the kids love the toy dump truck and loader on the bumper. It’s almost worth living with the huge bumper to do stuff like this 👍

Been busy so far this year and hope it continues. This time of year is normally slow but the truck has run nearly every day that the ground has been frozen enough to get around. These pics are from hauling lime this week to our farm to spread on hay fields and pastures. I pick it up at a quarry around 30 miles away because their lime is a higher quality than what we get locally. 19 tons on a load.
