Let's compromise with our northern neighbors, distance in miles and beer in litres.

I have no suggestion about the oil,but the trip itself i did it couple of time from Fort Mcmurray and Quebec,if you have a passport avoid Ontario go around it,its longer ,but faster.Ontario is a nice drive but [censored] long.Contact me if you have question . I know that [censored] road by hand .

What does 1 year up to 35,000 miles mean ??? why do people believe every thing they read about the advantages about syn oil to pay 3 or 4 times the price of dino except the extended oil change interval part?

mechjames,

You're going to have a great time on that road trip! I did the same thing with my girlfriend two years ago. She went to work in alberta for the summer and wanted her car to drive around.

I just changed the oil on her car with some dino before we left, and she had it changed before she returned. Like other's said, any synthetic would be ideal. I'd personally go with SSO, but I am a bit of an amsoil fanboy...in reality, anything of quality will do the job.

don't forget your tire pressure and other fluids!

I also highly recommend getting a CAA membership before you leave. I think mine is $90 a year and it could be a life saver for you if you blow a tire, or leave your lights on etc. You should also order a "trip tick" from them (they are free with your membership). They will plan out your full route for you on detailed maps that are around 100km scale each page. it lists construction areas, rest stops, places to stay etc. They were absoloutley AWESOME on this trip. They've got little history facts about the areas you pass through, too.

GPS is also a good investment it was nice to just drive into Saskatoon for lunch and explore, without worrying about getting lost.

The size of lake superior is ridiculous. that really hits home when it takes nearly 10 hours to drive it's length. it took me 22 hours of driving just to get out of ontario!

the point is, in what I'll call "northern" ontario you can drive many hours without seeing much civilization, the vast amounts of trees and wildlife we have it just amazing. For these reasons, make sure you fill up with gas frequently north of Sault ste. Marie. I think the biggest stretch was 300km between gas stations!

I'll probably end up sticking with Pennzoil Platinum for this. My plans are to eventually convert to AMSOIL and take full advantage of the extended drains, and I thought it might have been the right time to do it. I'm already using Amsoil Synchromesh and the PSF in this car.

@SupraSteve: I already have a CAA membership. I had Basic then Plus (and I was still breaking down far from home) so I bought the Premium, and I couldn't be happier! Nice to get home 320km for free! My TomTom comes in handy too.

I am planning to drive through Canada the way there and through the States on the way back. See two different parts of this continent. We have some friends in Timmins, ON, so unfortunately we're going to have to go through Ontario the First time.

Gas stations should be interesting. No Chevron outside of BC? [censored], I got a Chevron Gas Card too! Oh well, Husky for my BCAA rewards points. At least the cost of fuel gets cheaper after I leave BC. I don't have to worry about filling up as much, Stratus can do at least 900km for all highway driving. I'm certainly going to map out the fuel stations along my route, although my TomTom can find them.

I'm not going to UOA this fill of PP, but I will be UOAing it when I get back, just to see how much longer I can go on it. After that, i'll finish off the summer and switch over to SSO for the Winter.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Good question.

Will do! I got a new 8GB SDHC card for my Pentax.

I did a solo 11K MILE trip (PDX-DEN-DAY-ROC-DAY-TPA-DAY-ROC-DAY-CHI-MCI-DEN-TWF-PDX) last year in the SVX: changed the oil once in Rochester, NY. the 2nd time through. (Wiennie'd out by stopping in Twin Falls on the way back, but I was really tired!)

PP 10W-30 on the outbound leg (+1/2 Qt. top-off en route from Florida) and a "blended" gallon of RTS 5W-40 + 2 Qts. 5W-20 Formula Shell (+1/2 Qt. PP top-off about 150 miles from home, "just to be safe"). No problems at all.

You'll be fine with almost anything for what is basically a single almost "all-highway" 7.5K OCI.

Cheers! and have fun!

p.s. There are many people who couldn't even imagine driving Coast-to-Coast and back in that period of time! Be safe, too!

Remember this was made uears before the joke of a closing cerimony for the olympics. But who dosent like dancing mounties and inflateable beavers!!! oh canada!

Exactly. You don't need a boutique brand to do 7000 highway miles unless there are other issues with the vehicle.

I can get SSO at around the same price of a synthetic at a local auto parts store (NOT WALMART) I would have to drive to walmart to get a good deal on oil.

High mileage vehicle would be on its second run of synthetic. Could have been on any brand of dino for any oci in the past. And I was planning to change to SSO anyway. Just wondering if it was the right time to do it. Thats all I was worrying about.

Well that changes things. If you were planning to change to SSO anyway, now is the time to do it IMO.

Yea, we don't get all those oil deals and rebates in canada. Cheapest oil is at walmart, and even with conversion rates, in the US it is still cheaper. Not to mention the ECO fees BC charges on the oil and filters.

So for the 9$ per qt at the local parts store, I could buy SSO. Local parts store wants 12$ a quart for Mobil 1, $15 a quart for M1 EP, and the only deals you get is if you know the counter guy. Royal Purple is $17 BTW.

Pennzoil Platinum has been in there since January 18th, making it only 1.5 month almost and 2300km (1429 miles). It would be a waste.

So I just did this instead:

trip2010.jpg

Richmond BC, stayed over in Golden BC, drove up to Calgary, and stayed over to see some family, then drove up to Edmonton, stayed over, saw the West Edmonton Mall, then stayed another night to see family, and drove back into BC through Jasper, saw some friends in 100 Mile House on the way back, and then back home.

About 9K on the Pennzoil Platinum now, so I picked up some SSO & a EaO filter from the AMSOIL warehouse in Edmonton (10 min away from my hotel) and plan to switch that soon, and get the PP UOA'ed.

Driving the rockies usually keeps your foot to the floor in a lower gear in a 2.0 L stratus filled up with luggage and two people. Lots of redlining so we'll see how well the PP kept up.
