Draining oil filters before tossing

I have gotten into the habit of cutting used filters open after I remove them from the vehicle. The metal ends and cans go into the metal scrap bin.

the filter media and end caps go into a little plastic tote lined with a small garbage bag for cheep insurance and I use them for fire starters out in the desert when camping. 1 LARGE diesel fuel filter and two oil filters make a nice starter fire for other kindling.

That's a great idea....I was thinking of taking a few dozen out on my boat in Lake Erie and using them for trap pigeons.

We have a recycling center nearby and I take my old oil and filters there. Their filter machine crushes the filter and the oil is collected from it. I usually just turn my filter base side down in the funnel. Don't know how much is still left in, but I wouldn't think it would be all that much.

I turn it upside down, let it drain well and put it in the filter box for a while. Then turn them upside down again & shake the heck out of it.

Repeat for another 50 years?

We can recycle oil filters, oil bottles and oil in Vancouver area. But I do drill a hole in the top of the filter for easier transport.

I used to service big diesel gensets. At the end of a week, I'd have lots of big spin on oil filters. I made a fixture for the press that squeezed em and pressed the oil out. Got quite a bit. Made me feel better that it wasn't going into the ground.
