Hey guys,

I installed a Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter on my 2003 Mustang V8 a few weeks ago and noticed right away that the drain-back valve is junk. Any time the car sits for about 24 hours or more, upon start-up I hear those knocking sounds that I've only EVER heard right after an oil change. I've been changing my own oil for 26 years and have never experienced this. Also, I live in Phoenix, Az.

1. Could the valve have just failed that fast?
2. Is this common with the Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter?
3. Do you think AutoZone would exchange it for me or Mobil?
4. If not, can someone recommend another brand of an EP filter? I'm looking to run this oil (Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30) and filter about 13,000 miles (one year).

Thanks in advance

If you can exchange it, go ahead but it may well start working better after more heat cycles and not cause another problem. Or it might not... which is probably the more likely scenario. Normally, the Mobil 1s are good filters and one failure does not a bad line of filters make. We dont hear of many problems with the Mobil 1 filters. Personally, I would recommend a Fram Ultra, Purolator Synthetic or a Napa Platinum over an Mobil 1... mostly because they have a lofted synthetic media. If they won't exchange the Mobil 1, cut it open and see if you can find the trouble.

I use MC filters with Mobil 1 oils for 10K OCIs. A friend also uses MC filters on his Ford van with 5-30EP for 15K OCIs never had a problem.

Funny, I had a Mobil 1 filter do the same thing on my Villaquest.

Maybe asked before, what kind of media does an Mobil 1 filter have?

Fram Ultra would fit the bill pretty good IMO. Go to Walmart and get one for $9.

Thanks guys. I too decided on a Fram ultra if I don't get a replacement for my Mobil 1 filter.
