Man, I like these comments. Keep em' coming. Who knows maybe you could change my mind...

Just an FYI to all. This oil is the Quaker State Deluxe SAE 10-W-40, API SF, Energy Conserving.

Back label makes the following statement:

Quaker State, America's quality motor oil, is refined by experts from Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil. Quaker State Motor Oil has been helping to keep cars on the road and out of the repair shop for more than 70 years. At Quaker State, Quality is a Tradition. 1985 BY QUAKER STATE OIL REFINING CORP.

Front label in green and gold says:

REFINED FROM PENNSYLVANIA GRADE CRUDE OIL
QUAKER STATE
DeLuxe
SAE 10W-40
MOTOR OIL

I wonder if there are abandoned service stations with non-rusted cans of oil. Not bottles. CANS. I need me some SE oil for this car. I don't want to affect my warranty by using SF or SL or SM. LOL!!!

I wouldn't do it for two reasons. It doesn't meet 2003 specifications; and I would never use motor oil that was more than ten years old unless it was going in a lawn mower or a complete beater (and even then, it would have to be top-off!). But I too suspect it would be okay --provided you shook it up...

You might be able to sell it on Ebay though...

I've got a couple cases of Valv. in CANS too.

OK BITOG'ers, I've done the deed! Just changed the oil using the old 10-40 now all I have to do is wait for her to rack up 3,000 miles. As I said before, it might take a while since she mostly does short 1-6 mile trips. I left the Amsoil O29 filter on there (has 5000 miles on it) and added 4+ quarts of oil. I've got a sample kit from Blackstone too. If she hasn't done 3,000 miles by 3 months or so, I'll sample it then.
Wish me luck

PM me your address and I'll send ya a bottle free of charge and then, if you want, you can do the VOA.

Watch the used oil analysis or voa come back stellar and then all the BITOGers will be scavenging for ancient oil. I can see the titular thread... "25 year old QS de-thrones PP as BITOG darling" :)
This one will be fun to watch all kidding aside!

I don't think for a second this oil will hurt your engine. Remeber, the 3400 V-6 is a DIRECT decendant of the 2.8 V-6, which came out in 1979. Engines like this ran for thousands of miles on SF oils.

The thing that bugs me about this is that at this point, that oil is a collectors item. You could sell it to a collector, or keep it as a 'historic example'.

By using, it, you just throw it away. But, if you ARE doing this, I would defintly want to see a VOA or UOA.

So, you'll spend the $ on a used oil analysis, but not $10-12 on new oil?

I am telling your wife.

Don't do it man! The people of earth want to live out their lives to the fullest! Think of the children!!

jk, keep a shorter OCI and you should be fine.

If you're going to do it, I say do it right. When changing the oil you need to put on some knee high socks, bust out the old cassette player and crank up some Duran Duran

if short trip means 3 miles and 20 min or less, the oil will never get to temp. 15w40 couldn't get to temp in those conditions in 80F ambient here in a chevy 350 5qts. the good news was the following trips that day were not so bad. also my mileage went down a bit. went back to 5w30

Oh, just noticed it's "Deluxe". SM can't compete with Deluxe!
