Ok, I know I'm gonna get a lot of flack and flame for what I am about to do, but I'm gonna do it anyways! My wife's car is a 2003 Grand-Am with a 3400 V-6. It has 90,000+ on the engine. It runs good (currently) and burns no oil (unless I put synthetic in it). She makes short runs to work (see my "short tripper" post a few months ago). I happen to have almost a full case of Quaker State 10W40 circa 1985... (I sent Johnny a bottle of it for his collection). Guess where its gonna got? OMG, NO! don't say it! Yes, it's going in her car at the next OCI. Am I mad or what? Don't try to stop me, I've made up my mind already! No, I'm not going through a divorse or anything, just hate to waste "good", free oil. OK, let the firing begin. OH, wait, - I'm also doing a Used Oil Analysis after about 3,000 miles to see how it did. It might take a while since she only drives short trips so bear with me. BTW, she is currently running a mix of 10W-40 (circa 1989), Sunoco 10w30 (circa 2001) and new Supertech 5W30. Should be interesting don't ya think? Believe it or not, I do love my wife!

Not really unless they were open I'd do it, at least in a non-high performance app.

I have a bottle of Fire & Ice 2000 in the garage from the previous owners.

I'm a retard (no comments from the peanut gallery) when it comes to posting pics. I tried once, got frustrated, then posted a bad word and had a mod. yell at me.

Wait! You're proposing to put 25 year old oil into a seven year old car? What about meeting specs? Let alone if the additive pack is dead and all clumped up in the bottom of the container. Why not just run down to the Quickie Mart and buy some SA oil and kill that sucker off right?

You've said you love your wife, and apparently like her car...I just wonder what you might do if you hated 'em both? LOL.

I wonder if you're a risk taker...like the guys that would go around kicking sleeping lions in the rump out on the Serengeti just to see how they would react.

Rotsa ruck. :+)

Oil thats 25 years old? Why would you do that when you can buy a gallon of QS for about $11? That old oil might be a novelty you, but you are going to damage your car. At BEST- its lawnmower oil, otherwise I would use it as bar lube oil for my chainsaw. Do your thing if you are determined to, but know the risks!

That must be an SF oil. I wouldn't put it in my lawn mower. But you said you have made up your mind so go right ahead. I can't wait to see the used oil analysis on it. It is cool that I can see a used oil analysis for an oil like that without having to gum up my own engine I guess.

I picked my 99 GT up with 20 miles on it. Brake rotors, busted CD player, bad key ignition, spring in the front seats broke and put a hold in the cloth. bracket holding the bottom of the back seat broke. All within the first 5,000 miles..... Top it off, with a engine that died at 60,000 miles. So yeah, I agree with your statement.

Were you the next customer in line when Clark Griswold picked the Wagon Queen Family Truckster? That's 1971-1973 quality levels ...you know, where someone would come in with a brake light blowing fuses and the wrench would find the brake light wire wrapped around a grounded screw ...or the customer would come in with a rattle and they would eventually find a soda can inside a welded panel.

Then again, you could be Arco's brother for all I know and instead of drivetrains ..your thing could be interiors

Distribute the 10W40 among your friends for:

Door hinges, chainsaw bar oil, maybe a quick flush of a car that experienced gasket failure or a momentary problem, heck maybe even just give the rest to your local recycler.

Calculate the cost, modern energy conserving oil should increase your mileage by 2.7 percent per performance testing, it really is cheaper to just throw that 10W40 away.

The VI improvers in 10W40 oils of that era were also notorious for combustion chamber deposits and ring sticking issues.

Don't feel alone, but I am working on it and when I get it figured out the oil filter board is going to overload, been savin up.

fwiw, I used to use Fire and Ice back in the 80's.

Good Luck

Dude, I have a '76 Gran Torino and it specs SE on the dipstick and in the owner's manual. SF is like, totally an upgrade for me!

I would rock out to Creedence while my engine swills that stuff. It's not like what oil I use matters. I'm not being a nihilist about it, it's just that I burn a quart of it every 70 miles or sooner.

But I wouldn't put it in the Grand Am. Really. Send it to me. I'll send you back SuperTech SM-rated 10W40, quart for quart, even trade. But then again there's a part of me wouldn't mind seeing the UOA after it's run in a "newer" engine. I'm not sure how close the tolerances are in your 3400 versus say, an early 80's 2.8 V6. It might not make much of a difference.

I can't see this oil really hurting the car for one OCI. I've seen people do worse, and their cars are still running.

Besides, you could just run some Pennzoil conventional behind it.....
