Well I noticed that PUP 5w-20 in the 5 quart jug is back in stock at Wal-Mart online. Being due for a change, I was about to order before I realized that the price was now $54. Having an 8 quart sump in my 5.3L Silverado, that works to an $86 oil change, not counting filter. WTH! Pass...even though I'm a huge fan of the stuff.
I don't get it...did they try to one-up Castrol's titanium formulation by adding gold?

There's always regular PP

I suspect its only until the stock of packaging old bottles are gone so they don't end up with fire sale prices like last time. At AZ they were almost giving the SRT stuff away.

That's what I will switch to after this drain. Just don't understand SOPUS's thinking on this one.

Actually I'm so irritated by this I'm going to the dark side...M1 AFE from now on.

I heard from a reliable source the price is an error, having said that the price hasn't been corrected yet.

there's a little bit of a leap in logic to tie Wal-Mart pricing to sopus.

If you stopped into AutoZone and bought 1 qt of mobil1 for 10.99 would you say oh mobil1 raising the prices again?

However, there is a good point that you can't seem to get it anywhere except 2 places, Wal-Mart and Amazon so in essence those two places then define the retail price no matter the suggested retail price, and SOPUS is on the hook for that.

Might as well be free. Or $100/qt, for that matter.

Never seen the stuff

I figure there aren't enough unicorns from which to draw blood such that us in fly over country can be blessed with its presence.

At that price you could put Amsoil in the sump and have some money left over to have lunch somewhere. And go longer between changes.

I wouldnt trust any online pricing. Walmart sells for other vendors at their online store.

Thought the same, until I saw the "Shipped and Sold by Wal-Mart " tag on the page.

Still hoping it's a glitch on the website as suggested.

PUP is great oil, but there are many other great oils that have one thing PUP doesn't; availability.

All things considered, it isn't all that "special" anymore except for that one point (con, if you will), and I think many times something's allure is bolstered simply by being rarely available.

I used to be able to get it here off the shelf easily until about a year ago. UOA for my car was very good, but nothing magical (again, all things considered). I won't play their marketing game; I switched and never looked back.

I'd love to try PUP, but the current pricing makes no sense to me. $50+ for 5qts is more than Royal Purple and some Red Line, Amsoil, Schaeffers, Motul, LiquiMoly, etc.

PP for $23, plus the current rebate, is a nice deal though.

To be honest..after running PP this last run I prefer the M1 as car seems to be much quieter with M1. However I was very happy with PUP and luckily get it on sale here for about 34$ per jug and if lucky get a 10$ MIR. Id say PU is my fave oil right now followed by M1 and PP. I will be trying Castrol soon as well to see how i compare them very unscientifically.

Isn't Shell having issues with the GTL plant, and might this be a way to reduce demand on a slower selling SKU, so they can concentrate remaining production capacity on producing PP?

Just a theory.

Welcome!!

That's outrageous for any oil IMO. All API/Dexos 0w20 synthetics are basically the same. I like Valvoline synpower 0w20 when it's priced at $22.47 per 5qt on Walmart shelves.

I don't know if I would switch when PP is readily available, but hey, there's nothing wrong with M1 AFE ... it's high quality oil.

This is why I use PP, Ultra only appears to be able to clean a bit better than PP and other than that I see no real ground breaking difference between the two. PP already keeps engines clean enough to eat off of so that's good enough for me! It would be different if PUP was an extended drain oil like M1 EP to differentiate the two further. To the average consumer, they buy based off price and since PP is cheaper, most people are naturally going to opt for it.
