Changed oil on the F150 yesterday. Took off a FRAM High Mileage that only was on for 6 months. It was really tight on there! I used some FRAM filter grips and the filter literally caved in on me. The entire middle is dented up and there are loose pieces on the inside. I always wondered if the noises I heard could be from the FRAM's I used. Put on a NAPA Silver (WIX) no more noise and no more FRAM's for me!
Done with FRAM!

I've heard of this happening on the OCOD Fram quite often, so it doesn't surprise me that it happened on a non-Extended Guard Fram.
Just use a NAPA GOLD and be done.
As we have mentioned in many threads here on BITOG, there are much better oil filters for the money then Fram. I've read about them and cut a few open to see for myself - I won't use them.
The Fram HM is nothing more than an orange can with a gimmick goo lozenge inside. They cost more than the Tough Guard ($6.50-6.95) and are total waste of money. Another reason Fram has such a bad rep around here.
Without knowing more can't speak to what happened inside, whether it was before or after the can was dented.
That said, in the interest of fairness, I'm not willing to blame the Fram HM for being difficult to remove, and denting upon removal. Sounds as though it may have been installed too tightly to begin with. Any can could have dented under those circumstances.

I hope that Napa Silver doenst have the rubber "combo valve' design - our you just went from ho-hum to outright terrible.
Some time back, I read a comparison of oil filters. At the end, they slaughtered FRAM oil filters.
They said that Fram should be boycotted--one reason being that the $10 or $12 premium filter has the same filtering media as their $3 filter sold by WalMart. Fram just changed the outer shell!!!

The only FRAM I will 'consider' using is their Extended Guard.
Its been said many times before, there are many filters that are better constructed and cost about the same if not less than an OCOD
Did I not read recently that Champion Labs bought the Fram line from Honeywell? I wonder if that means Fram will be improving their product line. I have to admit I used a lot of Fram filters because I got them cheap where I worked. I installed a lot during my time as an oil change monkey. Of course that was 30 years ago when I was a starving college student working at a big box store's service center. I can't recall any filter related problems but I assume it is a different filter today than back then. I used Wix for years when I could get them and Pure One's for the last 5 or 6 years.
As far as I know the Napa Silver comes with the combo valve.
Actually I read somewhere here that an investment firm bought FRAM from Honeywell. The "Rank" group out of New Zealand?

I've damaged cans on removal with all sorts of diferent brands of oil filter.
Put the durn thing on too tight, and you may get some distortion and crushing when the time comes to remove it.
Every vehicle I have has had Fram oil filters at one time or another.
The BMW has a Fram in it, although the Fram cartidge filters look pretty good.
The '97 Accord has an OCD on it at the moment.
I needed an air filter for the '95 Subaru, so I took advantage of the $4.00 MIR on the purchase of one Fram air and one Fram oil filter, making the OCD essentially free.
I maxed out the Purolator rebates, getting oil and air filters for the '99 Accord and the '09 Subaru, so that wasn't an option.
The Purolator white bodies work in both Accords and the Impreza.
My point is that while I wouldn't seek out the OCD as a matter of preference, it is no better and no worse than any other basic low-line filter.
I've used a bunch of OCDs over the years, and have never had a problem with them.
Maybe Fram knows something about building an oil filter that works in actual use that we don't?
